Report: | Blackheath suffered a couple of late withdrawals so turned up (eventually) with 3 players.
First up where Greg and Ville and it started off tight with both players going point for point. Ville's game seemed to be in better shape as Greg struggled a little to get going. At 6-6 however it could go either way but Ville had the shots that made Greg pay for some inaccuracy and Ville was 1 up. The 2nd was looking better for Greg when he got to a 3-0 lead and at 5-2 he seemed ready to take the game but Ville was playing some good shots and he raced through to a 7-5 lead and that put paid to Gregs surge and surprisingly Ville was 2 up although he seemed to be suffering a little with an injury. The 3rd needed Greg to change things otherwise he was done for and Ville began to struggle to keep up as Greg duly settled in to a quick lead which kept extending until he had it won without dropping a point with Ville struggling to get around the court. The 4th saw Greg pulling away again but Ville was not done for and from 4-0 down he managed to work his way back in to it and when serving at 4-6 down the Dulwich crowd where getting a bit edgy. Ville needed some support from his team but at 8:30pm they were still not there. Greg stopped the Ville comeback and managed to finish of the game quickly to level at 2-2. The 5th set saw Ville done for due to a back spasm and Greg raced away to win the match and make it 3-0 for Dulwich before the rest of the Blackheath team had arrived.
Next up where Ben and Tim with Ben raring to go as he needed to get away "early". This was a game of numerous of cross court shots which had both players twisting and turning from the start. Ben got the first point but Tim gradually moved ahead although at 5-1 down Ben recovered a little to 3-6 then 5-7 but Tim was just the more clinical and he took it to go 1 up. The 2nd was similar to the 1st with Ben struggling a little to put pressure on Tim's game although both players where hitting the time more than they would want. At 3-5 to Tim he suddenly stole a march on Ben who put a few down with unforced errors and Tim had it to go 2 up as Ben seemed to tire a little. The 3rd was all one way as Ben struggled to keep retrieving Tim's drops and boasts and to was quickly 3-0 to Tim.
Finally it was Dave and Santiago and this was an energetic game with both player racing around the court retrieving most of what the other was doing. Sanit raced t a3-0 lead only to see it wiped out by Dave who then went ahead to 6-4 but Santi had too much energy raced away with it in the end. The 2nd was tight in the early stages but Santi gradually built a lead with some fine cross court shots into the nick and he held Dave at bay long enough to take it as Dave closed in near the end. The 3rd was nip and tuck but Santi seemed to be trying a little as he was making more mistakes than before although he was still maintaining a slight lead. When Santi moved to 7-4 up it seemed to be all over but Dave dug in and surged ahead by upping the pace and this did the trick as Santi struggled to deal with it and so it was 2-1. The 4th saw Dave in charge and he sped off to a 4-0 lead which he refused to let slip until he got to 703 up at which point Santi began a fight back as he recovered his nicking powers but just as he almost leveled at 8-7 down Dave found the shots to kill it off and make it a 5 setter. The 5th set saw Santi continuing his recovery as Dave failed to find the form he had been showing in games 3 and 4 and Santi moved ahead and despite Dave's attempts to pull it back he could not prevent Santi from winning a fantastic match.
Dulwich won another 3-2 with the help from Blackheath and the Dulwich Tandoori curry arrived on time as discussion turned to the in/out vote. |
