Report

Report: First on Herman verses Terry at number 3. The anticipated physical battle never materialised as Herman looked strong in recording a quick 3-0 victory. Meanwhile on Court 2, the sole member of Poultwood’s youth section Julian Cooke took on experienced Fitness player Andy. It looked like Julian’s long reach and impressive court coverage would win the day as he pulled out a 2 -1 lead dropping only 1 point in the third game. Unfortunately for Julian, Andy’s experience showed as he knew just where to stand for Julian to hit the ball back to him and the match swung dramatically to stand at 2 all. The final game was a nervous affair with a lot of mistakes from both players but Julian managed to scramble home. Sid verses Giles was a contrast of styles. In the first two games Giles kept the pace up and looked to be cruising to victory. In the next two he fancied himself as a shot player, which he is not. Sid simply upped his game, controlled the pace of the rallies and confidently pulled back to 2 all. The fifth game swung backwards and forwards eventually coming down to a couple of points which Giles won. Match score 3-0 Poultwood, but could as easily have been 2-1 to Fitness. At number one a rejuvenated Paul Mcleod fresh from a Christmas training regime that on his first half season performance was definitely required and “up for it” took on a George Fray who had a cough that sounded like he had smoked the cigarettes Paul had given up. That said George is a class player and showed it, to extend Paul to a gruelling five setter. A good win for Paul and Poultwood though. Finally Jake went on against someone who looked like Carlos. The real Carlos did not turn up. In the end 5-0 to Poultwood does not really reflect the balance of the fixture.
