Away Report

Away Report:It was 1st vs 2nd in this title deciding fixture between Blackheath and Bromley CC the last of the winter season for both.

Blackheath started the night 12 points ahead of Bromley who went in to fixture with a slim chance of claiming the league.

1st up on court was the Bromley skipper Kevin Gimenez vs Andrei Dan.

A tight 1st game laden with errors from both eventually saw the Bromley captain take the lead 1-0.
The 2nd game was another tight affair with Andrei taking it to level up 1-1.

The 3rd game was a one sided one and Andrei punished Kev with tons of boasts as Kev inexplicably sat deep at the back of the court no where near the T. 2-1 Andrei.

The 4th was a much more contested game but Andrei prevailed to take the match 3-1. Blackheath now leading the league by 14 points.

On the next court number 2 seeds Ross and Stephen were battling it out and on this occasion Ross got the better taking the 1st 2 games.

It looked like a much needed 3-0 win was coming for Bromley however Stephen raced to a 8-2 lead and the fightback looked on only for Ross to then take control and end up winning the game 8-10. 3-0 to Ross and the league lead cut down to 11 points.

Next up was Stuart Clarke and Dan Slater. Stuart only making his 2nd appearance of competitive squash in over 2 years due to knee surgery (and not his 1st surgery either).

The game started with Stuart in complete control. The widths and lengths were just too accurate for Dan to handle and when he wasn't hitting them lengths the drops were just as good.

This pattern didn't change and Stuart took the game in style 3-0. League lead now cut to 8 points.

The number 1 seeds were on the next court and Tony got off to a flyer winning 9-1 vs a stunned Richard P-S.

It looked like a 3-0 was on the cards but Richard had other ideas taking the 2nd 9-5.

Tony had to fight really hard to pull away from Richard who was playing some great lengths, however Tony did pull away when it mattered and took the next 2 games 9-6 to win 3-1.

With Tony, Ross and Stuart winning it meant Bromley had won the nights fixture meaning along with Tony's 2 points they also had the win bonus 5 points in the bag which meant Blackheaths lead at the top of the table stood at just 1 point.

So it was down to Sam Warnett of Bromley vs the Blackheath captain Kevin Clark to decide the outcome of the season.

Sam started off dominantly and was getting around the court really well defending the crafty shots of Kevin and putting the pressure right back on him.
Sam took the 1st game 9-6 to bring Bromley back to level on points.

The next game was pretty much the same as Sam covered the court well putting all the pressure on the perspiring Kevin.

Sam even threw in some of his trademark crazy drop lobs in the front corners (highest drop shots ever) to hand some points back to Kev but he saw the game out 9-6 to give Bromley the lead in the title race.

Sam was desperate to get the game and league won, however the plucky Kevin had other ideas and fought back superbly to take the 3rd game 9-6 and to bring Blackheath back level on points. Neck and Neck, it could not be closer !

Kev took the 1st few points in the 4th game and it was looking like he was going to win the title for his team after all but Sam was charging around the court with his long strides and wingspan of an albatross, and was in no mood to let this title slip after being so close.
He won the next few exchanges and the fitness shone through as Sam charged to victory with an Aguerooooo type league ending finish 9-5 which meant Bromley had won the league by the 1 solitary point.

A great end to a tightly fought season between the 2 teams.

Both get promoted with Bromley as champions. Well played Blackheath. We will see you again in the next winter league.
