Report: | With the courts in a maintenance cycle, the 1sts were unfashionably early, knowing that Tim at least would be bang on time for Dulwich's visit. So it proved, and the court sharing with court 2 out of action wasn't actually too bad in the end. As it turned out, this first match of the evening turned out to be the significant highlight of the evening with a scintillating performance from Gina.
First up: Kennedy v Garner
This one started off as you might imagine it would looking at Tim's long track record of burying everyone. Tim being the gentleman as Gina was into the short stuff far too early, and struggling a bit with an uncomfortable wrist. Tim took this fairly comfortably, pushing the ball around gently in his usual fashion.
From the 2nd though, it started to change. The coaching team advised patient pressure to length, mixed with a few less short ones. This one was level pegging throughout, with Gina saving a game ball before taking the game on a stroke. Similar pattern in the 3rd with Gina's confidence, bolstered by some great court coverage, starting to build. Third to Gina with a great finish to the game. At this point I suppose the expectation was that Tim would add a couple of extra gears and cruise away. Not so. Gina started finding some good kills short on the forehand and got to match ball, only to go for just a little too much. Tim snuck it narrowly.
All still to play for, but as Tim went off to 5-0 it look a done deal until 5 straight points to Gina in response. From this point on though, Tim used his experience to ease away for the win. Nevertheless, a superb effort from Gina.
Next up: London snr v Dakin
A tough one. Alex pretty much controlled the first. The author "forced", or at least received a number of errors from Alex's racket to take the 2nd. From here on came the crux of the match. The author put the coaching team (Gina's) advice to good effect for a while in the 3rd. A 6-0 lead. At this point, Alex decided to play it steady and safe, cut out all the mistakes and took 10 points on the spin to transform and take the game. The 4th was hard but Alex back in the driving seat again to take it in four.
Over in the backyard court: Kay v Horseman
Saw next to zilch of this. What I did see was Paul not playing any short balls (surprise). It sounds like a tight affair with the exception of the 3rd, comfortably taken by Paul. Thankfully that grotty wall surface is due to be replaced this week, so hopefully that court will no longer be on everybody's list of courts to avoid, with those ghastly grippy walls. Anyway, Paul got the PL team on the scoresheet win-wise.
Last up: Mitterter v Bristow
Jack looked somewhat ill at ease throughout this one. Jim produced his normal compact accurate performance. The short stuff on the backhand in particular seemed to be causing Jack some real problems. All games were well contested and pretty tight, but not many opponents are as consistent as Jack down the backhand. Jim was. A good win for Jim, to wrap it all up for the visitors.
A reasonably early finish given the court situation, and once again the four man teams in the summer seem to have an upside. |
