Report: | Unfortunately Paul was unable to continue after a few points due to injury but otherwise the visitors showed tough resistance. Gordon seemed to be cruising to victory, his well-timed and well-executed drop shots stretching Richard despite his speed around the court. But his sureness wavered in the 3rd game as Richard varied his serve to good effect. In the 4th game Gordon regained his confidence and Richard, though still fighting hard, could not cope with the resumed accuracy. I saw nothing of Hugo's match with Simon but the fact that Hugo was soon back on the balcony organising a post-match 'friendly' (the noisiest match of the evening) suggests a quick-fire victory. Tim almost came back from what looked like certain defeat by upping his game against Ed in the 3rd game. But for a few ill-judged shots he might have avoided a 3-0 result. Undoubtedly the most exciting match of the evening was between Chris and Ashley. Chris seemed to be just too consistent until, towards the end of the 3rd game, he perhaps relaxed and let Ashley snatch it. Ever resourceful and seemingly with renewed energy Ashley took the 4th and seemed likely to win the match. Crucially, he tinned several forehand drives and Chris took advantage after numerous hand-outs. A great start to the summer season.
