Report

Report:The first meeting of the two PL teams was a hard fought affair, with the 2nd team suffering more from the effects of the weekend competition (four of them compared to one of the 1st).

First up Grant v Pratt.
Trevor amazingly managed to turn up early for this, prompting speculation all round that his teammates had told him it was a Monday match. The match itself was a bit of a nursemaiding operation for the 1st team coaching staff. The fragile concentration levels of the Whirlwind needed constant bolstering. Despite repeated episodes of boredom, anger and "can I really be bothered with this" Steve managed to prevail, producing some pretty good shots in amongst the tins and trickshots to record a 3-1 win.

On the next door court - Miles v McCaughan.
John having dropped down the order as a result of a hard weekend made a good comeback in the 1st, not quite sneaking it, before suffering a bit to go down in the 2nd. At this point Kev went off the boil, and John powered through the next two games to take it into a decider. Obviously buoyed by dire threats from his teammates Kev managed to get it back on track in the 5th to take a 3-2 victory.

Next, Harris v London.
After a battle royal at the weekend Adam couldn't quite have been ready for the marking experience he had in this one (despite the warnings and the sudden absence of volunteers)! Despite some - shall we say - protracted "banter" about various (read every) decision(s), this was an enjoyable game (at least to play in, can't vouch for the spectators). Up to the 4th it was a carbon copy of the weekend, with honours even in the first two, Clive managing (again) to let a game ball get away in the 3rd. This time though Clive managed to sneak the 4th despite the best efforts of both players to lose it, but Dave had a bit too much in the 5th to win 3-2.

Next door - Wise v Bonner.
Didn't see any of this one, but it looks as though Andy continued his fine start to the season recording a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Nick.

The last match on - Blackman v Rich.
Having both been here early, Andy and Adam weren't too thrilled to be on when most people would be looking to be in bed. Andy had to be elsewhere by 11.15 and Adam looked for large chunks of the match as though he already was somewhere else (the game was ok, but the awareness levels were away with the fairies). The first four games were a bit of a see-saw ride, with both players dominating patches of the games. Adam clearly (see above) had other things on his mind though. In what everybody else saw as the gap between the 4th & 5th, Adam had convinced himself it was the end of the match and that he'd lost. Andy went on court ready to play, only for Adam to ask "what are you doing", whereupon it was gently explained to him that there are five games in a squash match when the score has reached 2-2.

This all seemed to destroy Andy's game, and Adam blitzed the last 9-0 to win 3-2.

The points scoreline doesn't really do justice to the match, as most of the games were real battles. Still, at least for PL 1 this was a good result with plenty of points. It appears that BH are already girding their loins to disappear over the horizon, leaving the rest of us minnows to battle for the scraps. Maybe the Cornwallis Cup is the thing to aim for this year. With only one PL team entered we should be pretty strong.
