Report

Report:Thanks to the scheduling gurus, PL travelled to the wilds of Dulwich to face a double-header after (surprise - all those cynics on the forum gloat now), being unable to field a side for last week's Cornwallis Cup match. Not only that, various rumours of more expensive imports had been doing the rounds.

Sure enough, the captain and chief correspondent's (late) arrival at Burbage Towers confirmed all our worst suspicions. Big Kev had already sent his opponent to hospital and there was the Whirlwind doing battle with the most attractive player the Priory league has seen in many a long year.

So, first up had been Harsum v McCaughan.
Didn't see any of this extremely short match, but Kev having gone into an early lead in the first, apparently decided to employ Barcelona tactics, and clouted Steve on the head with his racket. Result - trip to hospital. 3-0 to Kev.

On the other court - Briggs v Pratt.
Dulwich's new star signing Lauren (currently at no.6 in the ladies national rankings) was giving the Whirlwind a good run around. Accurate, floaty lobs mixed in with tight drives were sending PL's fireman elect to all corners of the windswept court. Despite this Steve displayed revitalised enthusiasm, and as is usually the case when he knows he's in for a hiding unless he performs, he responded well to the challenge. His own inimitable brand of squash led to a succession of winners mixed in with the inevitable flurry of tins. Had he been able to keep up his all out attack displayed in the 2nd he could well have sneaked this, but in the end, Lauren's relentless consistency and Steve's lack of fitness proved too much.
I can't let this go (so he tells me anyway) without mention of Steve's stunning crosscourt backhand volley into the nick in the 2nd game; smiles of incredulity from both players to this one. 3-1 to Lauren.

Next up Brownsden v Bonner.
Didn't see a lot of this one. Despite taking an early lead in the 1st, Andy found himself unable to deal with Will's dynamic retrieving ability and was dispatched in reasonably short order. 3-0 to Will.

So, things looking bleak at this point. It's all down to the PL captain. No problem. Only Tim to beat! Garner v London.
Well, your intrepid correspondent felt he actually played reasonably well in this match. Six points seem a scant reward, but I suppose the outcome wasn't really in too much doubt. Every decent shot seems to come back with interest. Still, it was quite an enjoyable game, and personally I think it's good to see a few star players showing how it should be done. Dulwich seemed to sport a pretty full gallery to see their stars, and they all seemed to enjoy the proceedings. Nice to have a bit of atmosphere, and this despite Chelsea v Barcelona on the telly.3-0 to Tim.

Last on Marlow v Rich.
Again, only really caught the end of this one. Adam looks to have run out of steam judging by the scores. The courts were very drafty and consequently quite dead, and by the time I started watching Adam was getting stuck at the back, and starting to look a bit cheesed off with proceedings. The first three games look to have been quite keenly contested, but the 4th was a routine one for Duncan to wrap up his match 3-1.

So, a comprehensive win for Dulwich. Mighty Hill have another(!) star signing waiting in the wings to challenge the thus far untroubled Tim, but PL I'm afraid are left to return to the drawing board.

The evening finished with a good meal - especially appreciated by Andy Bonner - who proceeded to tuck into two full meals whilst regaling all present with tales of his exploits from wa a a a y back at Dulwich (and seemingly every other club in South East England).
