Report

Report:Another sweltering night at Bromley meant for a very sweaty night of squash yet again in this summer league fixture.

Winter champions Bromley won the league by 1 point in the last game of the season vs their opponents tonight Blackheath and they carried on in the same vein with another tight fixture.

1st up on court was Paul vs Marc and Sam vs Richard.

Paul vs Marc started off a tight affair with Paul taking it on the tie break.
The next 2 games I hear were a lot more comfortable for veteran Roberts who took them 9-4 and 9-5 to put Bromley 1-0 up.

Meanwhile Sam and Richard were slugging it out on the next court. Richard started off very casually with Warnett being the total opposite rushing around the court.
However Richard still took an early lead and looked like winning the 1st.
Sam had other ideas and his hard work and movement around the court earned him the 1st 9-6.
The 2nd game saw Warnett in control and he was pushing high up the court and taking Richards shots early on the volley. Another 9-6 win to go 2-0 and it looked like another win for Bromley.

Richard came out in the 3rd looking fresher than Warnett and the casualness maybe had paid off as he seemed to have more energy.
He took the 3rd 9-3 and then the 4th 9-3 to tie it at 2-2.

Sam put all his efforts in to the 5th and final game but Richard was hitting the more accurate shots which eventually saw him see out the game 9-5 and take the match for Blackheath. 1-1. Enjoyable game to mark.

Up next we saw number 1 seeds Tony and John and captains Kevin G and Kevin C.

The number 1's had a tight 1st game with John playing some tight squash against the very experienced Tony D. Tony just sneaking it 9-7.
However the quality of Tony shone through in the 2nd as he won 9-0. Bagel.
The 3rd saw John fight back with a valiant effort however Tony just proved to be too good to win 9-6 and take the point for Bromley. 2-1.

The 2 Kevs, one tall and slender, the other short and well, not slender, battled it out and started off with many hand outs. The score was locked at 3-3 for what seemed like an age. However the shorter wider of the 2 Kev's took the 1st game 9-3.

Kevin C however hit back with the same score to put it level at 1-1.

Gimenez decided to throw in some more drop shots and raced to a lead of 8-3. 5 game balls. Surely he couldn't throw this game away....... yes he could. Too many errors and loose shots saw the Blackheath skipper fight back to take the game 10-8.

A depressed Bromley captain had nothing left in the tank physically and emotionally. More loose shots and weak backhands saw the more experienced of the Kevin's finish off the match taking the 4th 9-3. 2-2 with 1 match to play.

That match saw Giles of Bromley face Ashley of Blackheath.

Ashley started off great taking the 1st 9-1. Giles responding by taking the next 2 9-3 and 9-3.

At this point it looked like no return for Ashley who was most definitely feeling the heat. However he fought back and showed great character to take the game to a 5th by winning the 4th 9-3.

So the teams that were separated by 1 point for the winter league were locked at 2-2 with 1 game to decide the nights winners.

Luckily for Bromley Giles stopped hitting what seemed to be his favourite shot (the tin hitter), and started finding his range.
Some great rallies between the 2 but Giles finishing off the rallies that mattered most and took the 5th 9-5 to win the game and the match for Bromley 3-2.

A good sweaty nights squash had by all.

See you at the return guys.
