Report: | I guess it's the lot of every captain of a squash team, so it came as no big surprise to receive a call at 2.30pm on the day of the match letting me know that my team would look somewhat different to the anticipated lineup; the Whirlwind cried off with a case of Montezuma's revenge.
So, no number 2, but thankfully, as last week we were well served by another victorious 11th hour stand-in, this time in the person of Nick Wise.
First up Leach v McCaughan.
Kev was keen to point out that his promotion to the stratospheric heights of no.4 was long overdue, and duly took to the court with Dave to prove the point. Dave as usual was keen to get done and dusted before the curfew. After a promising start with several decent drops, things tailed off a bit. Dave kept to a consistent sensible game, Kev suffered from some dubious shot selection, with a few too many mistakes. Despite battling away and coming back well to win the 3rd, the mistakes won through in the 4th and Kev was defeated 3-1.
On the other court - Willmor v Wise.
Emergency stand-in Nick, on the comeback trail after injury got off to a flying start. Both players are possessed of a range of tricky shots, and Nick looked to dominate in the early part of both of the first two games, only to be pegged back by Peter. Nevertheless Nick held on to go two up. Peter got into gear well to dominate the 3rd, setting the stage for a comeback. It wasn't to be however, as a close fought 4th saw Nick battling through to win it 10-9 and record a 3-1 victory.
So, job done, and Nick was off to support the boys at Langley Towers as they tried (and narrowly failed as it happens) to batter Mighty Hill into submission with their new (temporary) all star lineup. Still, he was in good company, as the captain's erstwhile no.1 supporter had decided she'd rather "go and watch some real squash" too.
Next up Stabler v London.
Well, after the disappointment of last week (well it was to me), it seems there may be some life left in the old dog yet.
Working on the basis of no.1 son's advice, Clive was trying to get onto every ball as early as possible, to pressurise the youngster. It seemed to work, as after a good start Sam started to make mistakes. To be fair, this wasn't a game Sam will want to remember for too long, as things really didn't work for him on the day. Even the shots that looked to be going for winners were clipping the top of the red line. The longer it went on, the more it continued. So, in the end a 3-0 win for Clive.
Kimpton v Rich.
These two could probably have spent the time their match look comparing symptoms of their various ills. Rich(ard) is now starting to overcome the skepticism from his teammates about his ability to close out games 9-0. After a battling 1st Rich(ard) did exactly this to win the 2nd. As is normally he case, the chief reporter was on court at the same time as Adam, so is unable to cast any further light on the match, but it appears that having got into his stride Rich(ard) went from strength to strength to close out the 3rd and record a 3-0 win.
So, match sitting at 2-2 (much to my surprise) and all to play for. The stage was now set for - Jeal v Bonner.
Every time I walk onto a squash court lately I seem to be confronted by "Our" (or in this case "their") Ted and his entourage. So, having been "entertained" by them all caterwauling, climbing the rear walls of the court, and sprinting up and down the gallery earlier in the evening, it was time for the decider.
I didn't get to see too much of this, but from what I did see, Andy got off to a pretty good start despite sounding like death warmed up. He got a couple of game balls at the end of the 1st, and was generally hitting some pretty sweet looking shots. Ted closed out the 1st 10-8 however, and at this point it was time to get showered in time to come back and see the recovery. Not to be, sadly. The sight that greeted me was a dejected (and none too happy) Andy walking back down the corridor after having lost 3-0.
The after match socialising was well up to the usual hospitable Cannons standard, rounding off a good (if disappointing result wise) evening. Well, with one notable exception (see if you can guess). This left a fulminating Leach with plenty of scope to give vent to one of his legendary gripes about "bloody kids ... no respect ... discipline .." etc. Seems like he might have a good case actually. Now in myy y y day ...........
