Report: | Where do I start with this one.
Oh I know. BLACKMAN YOUR A SLY OLD FOX!
The penny didn't drop with me earlier this week when I had a nice little tinkle from Jon Miles wittering on about how it would be good for us to play again as it has been so long since our last game but I would need to switch my position in the order for that to happen.
When the boys from the Hill arrived at PL to be greeted by everyone and their dog we were still thinking 'oh how very nice for all these people to come and watch the leaders ply their trade'
I was quickly whisked on against Jon only for Blackman to slope off and reveal his nuclear bomb for the evening in the shape of James Robbins. 'Can't switch your order lads the DC is already on'. Lots of sniggers from the gallery as they had all been primed for the evening.
Let battle commence.
First up Laney v The Sly Fox
Didn't see any of this one but did hear lots of shouts, screams and bleating from the sacrificial lamb which amounted to Laney playing good tight shots at light speed and moving well.
3 zip to the big fella.
TTT Rent Boy v The Bomb
After the initial fallout had settled these two got on court in front of a full house to put on a great show.
First game was a tight affair with Rent Boy playing some qaulity rallies to take an early lead, But James didn't take long to get in his stride bringing it back to 7 all. Two loose rallies by Rent Boy at the end meant first game to James.
Second game followed the same pattern as the first with fantastic retrievals and shotmaking from both lads but again James kept calm to nick it.
At this point DC handed out some sound advice to Rent Boy which he promptly ignored and the 3rd was lost comfortably, thats not to say Rent Boy gave up as he was still scrapping well right to the end.
Well done to both lads, this was quality squash played in a really good spirit with the marker only needing to call the scores all match.
Debt Collector v Jon Boy
Have to say I was right up for this one as It had been put about for some while (probably Blackman again !)that Jon would take the DC this time.
The way Jon started left me in no doubt this was a distinct possability. Jon hitting the ball low and hard to a great length left the DC constantly having to scramble out of the corners to keep in each rally. To no avail Jon took the 1st easily 9-2.
Change of plan needed with DC hitting better line & length without trying to force winners, mistakes started to creep into Jon's game and the match was all square.
3rd saw the DC take a good lead but Jon again upped the pace and clawed his way back to 6-8 only to let it slip with two errors.
The forth followed the same pattern as the 3rd but DC sensed Jon was starting to wilt and finally closed the match out 3-1.
Lot of pressure on Jon to win this one as he's had some great wins recently. I can see now why the Fox has talked him up so much lately.
A Good Few Beers v Dave Harris
This looked like it could be a tight one and so it turned out with AGFB playing good steady squash and Dave hitting the tin to many times when going for the winners.
Both the second and 3rd were very tight affairs with AGFB covering a lot of court with some great pick ups which frustrated Dave as many of these rallies resulted in lets. However Dave was slowly finding his range and the outright winners started to outweigh the mistakes. The end result being the 2nd and 3rd going to Dave.
The fourth saw Dave playing some quality squash going 6-0 up in quick time. AGFB worked hard to get back in but the final result was a good win for Dave.
This was a hard and physical match which I have to say was marked brilliantly by Jon Miles.
So 2-2 and into the last.
Mighty Mac Mcmanus v Trevor
The signs did not look good for the Hill even before kick off as the Mac had not picked up a racket for over a month due to injury. This certainly showed in the first two games with Gordon Peppering the tin and Trev making some great pick ups and even better counter drops.
PL 2-0 up and Blackman looking very smug indeed seeing his cunning plan coming to fruition.
BUT, years of experience and a lorry load of pride saw Gordon start to turn things around winning the 3rd well and selling his soul in the forth to force a final showdown.
The fifth was vintage Gordon rolling back the years playing tight winners at the front and width hitting forcing Trev back and out of position.
No lack of nerve from Gordon and the fifth is closed out in some style at which point he then folds up into a horrible soaking heap on the floor, the Hill lads not wishing to get anywhere near that sort of mess called their congrats from distance and headed straight to the bar!
So a great night for the 'Bog standard' Hill side, 15 points gained not 5 points lost me thinks.
All banter aside, another great advert for the rising standard of Priory squash. Well done Andy it really should have been the mugging you planned so well.
A final footnote to the sly fox. The chicken from the Hill does not get it's throat cut easily, and on the return that chicken will be an eagle !!
Nearly all true ray, well done. |
