Report: | Two teams very much up for this one and with the Priory royalty on hand to watch it had to be good.
Lots of verbal jousting before kick off with Slack telling me 'my arm hurts' and 'Falla's not the player he was' and rounded off with 'Steph dosn't play anymore'. Must admit I did chip in with 'Gordons not the player he was a year ago'
With all that crap out of the way, on with the match.
Debt Collector v Matt
Get the straightforward game out of the way quickly.
Matt was far to strong in all areas for DC, hitting great length, taking lots of early vollies and finishing off with tight kills at the front. A comfortable 3-0 win for the bad guys.
TTT Rent Boy v Mark
The way Rent Boy kicked off in this one quite frankly was stunning. Knowing Mark has been in pretty good nick lately it may be suprising to some to see Rent Boy take the first 9-0 and lead the second 8-0. Only a sympathetic decision from Mr Bunts in the marking chair allowed Mark his first point but no matter, the second going to Rent Boy 9-1.
The third was a different matter with Mark working very hard to find a way back into this match and he did with some heroic retrieving which resulted in Rent Boy trying for tighter kills resulting in too many tins. 9-7 to Mark.
Rent Boy at this point decided to take up a new sport by converting his racket into a javelin and do you know what, he's pretty good at that as well. Launching a perfect throw he parted Mr Bunts substantial eyebrows before scoring a direct hit on the intended target being the light directly above the gallery.
Converting his weapon swiftly back into a squash racket, the forth game saw Rent Boy re assert his control in convincing fashion to finish with a comfortable 3-1 win.
Laney v Steve
Didn't see much of this one due to marking duties for a couple of hackers on the other court but I am told it was all blood and guts from beginning to end (wouldn't have expected anything else from these two lads). A long match with 110% commitment from both players the final result being 3-2 to Steve. Credit to both lads as this game probably summed up the whole evening. Hard squash but played in good spirit.
A Good Few Beers v Slack
Game of two halves this one. Slack starting the better with lots of power hitting mixed with some great kills into the front nicks. First game going all the way with Slack taking it 9-8.
Second game saw Slack taking control with confidence growing and it has to be said getting a pretty good read on what AGFB was doing. At 8-4 up it was looking grim for the Hill.
At this point Slack probably summed up the situation best when he later said 'I knew then I would win' at which point he didn't !
A couple of errors from Slack and some tight lengths from AGFB brought the score back to 8-8 at which point two unforced errors gifted the game to AGFB.
From this point AGFB confidence increased and Slack started to make more errors resulting in two hard games but with AGFB in control finally taking the match 3-1.
2-2 and into the last.
Mighty Mac Mcmanus V.C. v Steph
He really couldn't pull it off again like last week could he ?
Well, after seven straight tins and swiftly losing the first 9-1 the answer seemed obvious. The second saw no reason to change this view with Steph going 8-1 up at a canter. But just like last week the light suddenly switched on and the Mac started to rumble firing in winners with pinpoint accuracy taking no notice of the scorline and in one hand prompltly won the next nine points to level the match.
What followed left the P.C. and most of us gobsmacked by the quality and accuracy of Gordons winners. The next two games were reeled off in quick time resulting in a 3-1 win for the Mac.
This fixture promised to be a tight affair and it was (apart from my contribution) but it was played in a sporting manner which was a credit to all.
Don't worry Slack, you'll be on a winning side this Thursday!
A final Footnote from the Hill commitee which reads:
Never in the Field of Priory Conflict has so much been owed by so many to 'THE MAC'. |
