Report

Report:A big crowd this week at Plaistow Lane who were all there to watch the top 2 runaway teams in division 1 face off in what could potentially be a title deciding match.

Bromley with their strongest line up of the season vs a strong unbeaten Dulwich team meant we would see on show players with a combined Squash levels points total of 91,791. What a night this promised to be and it did not disappoint.

1st up to face off was the young Perry Malik vs Iain Tennant. Now I didn’t see much of this as was marking on the next court but from what I did see it looked like Perry had too much in his locker for the plucky Iain.

Perry mixing up his game nicely with some tight accurate lobs and some rocket hard cross court nick winners. A fine display of squash from the babyfaced assassin Perry who took the game 3-0 to get Bromley off to a nice start and an early lead.

On the next court starting was Perry’s older brother Curtis vs the former world number 26 Tim Garner.

James Robbins was due to mark this match but shoved the pen and clipboard my way and scurried off. Before legging it he claimed that his money would be on Tim who he thought would have too much experience and court craft for the young Curtis. This turned out to be very wrong indeed.

Curtis played some unbelievable squash of the highest level and with youth on his side he covered every inch of the court to retrieve the classy shots of Tim.

The 1st game saw Curtis dispatch Tim 11-2.

Tim was much better in the 2nd and was matching Curtis for shots however Curtis did not stop retrieving ball after ball and with some lovely finishing shots (especially the back hand drops) of his own he took the 2nd 11-7.

The 3rd was similar to the 1st game with Curtis dominating the game and on more than one occasion sending Tim the wrong way with some great deception. It ended up 11-3 and a superb 3-0 win for Curtis against a top quality opponent. 2-0 Bromley.

Next up were the number 1 seeds Ted Jeal vs Vinicius Rodrigues.

This match saw Bromley’s Ted start like a man possessed with some squash that Vini found too hot too handle. Ted hitting some outrageous winners to little response meant that he took the 1st 11-3.

Vini isn’t number 1 seed for no reason and the former World number 132 fought back and matched Ted to take the 2nd game in a very gruelling 11-9.

This beast of a 2nd game had pretty much taken all the wind out of Ted’s sails and the class of Vini was too much for Ted who didn’t have enough in the tank to go toe to toe. Vini took the next 2 games 11-4, 11-2 to give Dulwich a much needed win on the night. 2-1 Bromley.

Next we had the runaway marker James Robbins vs Jim Bristow (no relation to Eric to my knowledge).

What a match this was. A 5 game thriller that could have gone either way.

The 1st game was a pretty tight affair and Jim’s retrieving was pretty impressive as James tried to hit his winners. James did take the 1st 11-6 however.

Jim started the 2nd game on top form and dominated. With James doing court sprints galore it was Jim who would take the 2nd with an impressive display 11-3.

Jim carried on this form in to the 3rd, however James put up a much better fight. The fight though wasn’t enough and Jim took the game 11-7 to put him within touching distance of winning his match and levelling up the team scores.

James Robbins had other ideas though and although looking the more tired of the 2 he started to slow the pace down and with good hold and deception in his shots found himself in more control of the game. It was nip and tuck but the 4th game went to James 11-9, so in to the 5th game we went.

Jim was still looking as fresh as a daisy and a betting man probably would have backed him to take the last. James though showed his desire and determination as he matched Jim’s running and retrieving.
The final game was a tight one but it was the Bromley man who came out with the winning shots at the key moments of the match. A couple of lovely cut volley drops were impossible for Jim to pick up and James took the decider 11-9 to give him a win and to guarantee Bromley the win on the night. Well played both Jims’s.

3-1 Bromley

Last match of the night was between Lewis Ryall and Alex Dakin.

With James winning the match for Bromley it meant the pressure was off Lewis and this surely helped him with his performance. He was gliding around the court and seemed full of confidence as he was getting back most of Alex’s ferocious hard hitting shots. The 1st went to Lewis 11-9.

Alex played some lovely squash in the 2nd with another close game this time going in his favour 12-10.

The next 2 games however saw Lewis dominate and with some trademark back hand volley cross court nicks and some attacking squash, it was Lewis who would take the next 2 games 11-5, 11-8 for a 3-1 win and to leave the scores on the night Bromley 4 Dulwich 1.

A top night of squash for sure and a great win for Bromley who surely now with 5 games to go become favourites for the title. Watch this space.
