Report: | After the feverish excitement of the summer season and intense speculation about the all star line-ups to be sported by many of the Division 1 clubs, PL kicked off their winter campaign with their own new "big signing". Well done Kev, Malcolm is sure to miss you. Sadly, we have also lost messrs London junior to university and Gill to Beckenham.
Tunbridge Wells started off in McManus mode by arriving fashionably late having got lost. It appears they too are struggling to put out their stars. Tapsfield (at Tory party conference) and Herridge (unable to successfully negotiate his signing on fee) were both absentees.
This provided PL with the ideal opportunity to try and get early points on the scoreboard in what promises to be a tough season.
First up to bat were Whirlwind Pratt (alias Mr Indispensable) v Ward.
Steve, reaping the benefits of a gruelling summer training programme, swept into an early lead against newcomer Andy. Adam (marking) was heard to remark in the break "don't worry, this will go to five". True enough the 2nd was over in a flash with Steve producing a flurry of tins. Despite this he regrouped and dispatched Andy in the 3rd & 4th to record an entertaining 3-1 victory.
Meanwhile star signing McCaughan v Sutton was on the other court.
Kevin's laid back brand of "reading" his opponents game by standing at the back of the court and waiting for him to hit it back (which he duly did), was working a treat. This combined with some unreturnable tight boasts saw Kev race away with the 1st game. After this point, Ross tightened his game up, and Kev also had to fall back on his summer training regime as he was made to work hard to win the next two games. Kev tells me he played a superb backhand crosscourt nick in there somewhere, but what do I know, I was only marking (probably watching SP's game at that point)? Kev duly wrapped it up 3-0.
Next up Rich v Johnson.
Didn't see this one but Adam tells me (and the scores confirm), it was a tight one. The first two and 4th went to the wire, with Adam obviously working out the answer (and subsequently forgetting it again) in the 3rd. This left Adam in the unusual position of scoring 4 more points than his opponent whilst losing 3-1 to Steve.
On the other court, your intrepid correspondent v Buckner.
Remembering a tough battle last season, Clive decided to try and start attacking early on. The first was a pretty even affair with Clive doing enough to sneak some hard rallies. This set the pattern for the rest of the match really. The 2nd and 3rd were hard fought, but Clive did enough to ease through to record a 3-0 win.
Last on were Bonner v Marburg.
Having played a blinder against Streett last time round, but got injured for 6 weeks in the process, Andy was keen to reprise the first bit while leaving out the second. This game was pretty similar to Clive v Paul really. The games were competitive but Andy held the upper hand, and proceeded to record a 3-0 victory.
So, a good start for PL, with TW looking like they need to goad their stars back into the fold. Next week it's bring on the 2nd team. Stay tuned ... |
