Report: | A strange match this one. The first half looking like nobody really cared, the second half seeing some battling PL performances to sneak victory from under the Cascades boys noses. All this topped off with a vintage performance from BBGB in the bar afterwards.
First up Rich v Stimpson.
For a change I got to see some of Adam's match. He started off firing on all cylinders, comfortably taking the 1st and cruising into a lead in the 2nd. At this point, his (claimed) tactic of playing for time to allow the three more tardy members of the PL team to put in an appearance seemed to backfire spectacularly. The 2nd was lost (at which point I had to depart to play), and seemingly the next two got away too. So a 3-1 win for Mike.
Author v Soliman.
I think Mo has suffered a bit too much at the hands of all the old gits in his team (certainly judging by his totally bemused expression in the bar afterwards as BBGB described his forthcoming trip to The Multi-Coloured Swapshop). He was off to quite a good start in all of the games, but after two or three points his concentration appeared to start to wander slightly (maybe it was just my good play!). Anyway, all three games went pretty much the same way leading to a 3-0 win for London senior.
Incredible Sulk v Lake.
After several less than inspiring or inspired performances from the Artist Formerly Known As Whirlwind, co-captain Rich in the author's absence last week, decided that he could benefit from a journey slightly southwards in the order. Two words sum up AFKAW's reaction to this - NOT IMPRESSED. Now I would have thought that most people's response to this would be something along the lines of "stuff you, I'll show you where I should be playing", closely followed by an attempt to hammer your opponent. Not so AFKAW. 0-9, 0-8 down before either guilt on AFKAW's part or a few mistakes from Tony let a few home points onto the scoreboard. To be fair, the interest levels did seem to rise at this point, with the 3rd being won by AFKAW and the 4th fairly tight too. So 3-1 to Tony. Team psychologist required methinks.
At this point with Cascades leading 2-1 and PL staring down the motivational barrel, a transformation occurred.
Fink v Lamprell.
Chris making one of his (sadly) all too rare appearances for PL appeared well up for his match with Stuart. This turned out to be the match of the night, with Stuart even engaging the Master in a contest to see who could hit the most overhead nicks at one point (and hitting quite a few in the process). The match swung this way and that with Chris losing the first but coming back strongly to win the 2nd and go 8-0 up in the 3rd. The amount of time and effort it look him to finally finish the game took its toll on both players and Stuart battled back to take the 4th. Come the 5th though, Chris turned on the afterburners and cruised to a hard fought victory. AFKAW take note - this is called team commitment (oh I forgot, you'd gone home by then).
Last on Bonner v BBGB (wearing his early Christmas present - truly a case of Pinkerton's Assorted Colours for those old enough to get the reference).
Having managed to ensure BBGB was kept away from the bar for as long as possible (a late arrival even by Andy's standards), it was all down to this match. BBGB started off well, taking Andy out fairly comfortably in the 1st. After this though BBGB proceeded to inform his teammates that he was ever so slightly tired (or words to that effect), and Andy stepped up the pace to chase everything down and dominate the next two games. The fourth was a tight affair with Andy sneaking it 10-8 to ensure PL got a bit of early Christmas cheer.
Talking of Christmas cheer, the promised and eagerly anticipated Christmas turkey and trimmings failed to materialise due to the kitchen being flat out supplying same to paying punters from all points of the compass as well as coping with three sets of squash teams. Still, yours truly used his customary excuse to avoid the burgers that everyone else got and bagged one of the two remaining Christmas meals (and very nice it was too thanks Jez - cheque in the post).
BBGB was on his usual sparkling form (though it was left to Stuart and pals to make up for BBGB's (supposedly) reformed, and actually quite restrained, character on the drinking front). I thank God not to have ever been a guest at BBGB's abode judging by his yarning. Christmas note to Mrs BBGB - BBGB sounds to be in dire need of several pairs of new Calvin Kleins. The girls on the table behind us are probably in need of a break from BBGB.
A thoroughly enjoyable end to what started out as a strange evening - the Cascades boys as usual being good value. Merry Christmas to one and all. PL will attempt to step up the recruitment campaign over the Christmas period.
