Report: | Biggin Hill sitting pretty on the top spot entered in to this match knowing they had to win to keep hardy opponents Tunbridge Wells at bay.
When we saw James, the TW no 1 turn up, we knew that would shift them all down the order and we'd have a fight on our hands.
Match 1 (5 th String) - Biggin Hill's Simon Wanford took on Chris from Tunbridge Wells in a crash bang wallop type of contest. The 2 nd game was Simon's best chance to get something out of the match but maybe a few too many mistakes kept it out of reach. Chris then wrapped up the third with relative ease resulting in a 3-0 defeat for BH.
Match 2 (4 th String) - Biggin Hill's Ray Bushell was up against an unorthodox TW opponent who seemed to have a baseball type serve and a tennis forehand - despite this the TW chap was deadly when it came down to volley kills and low hard winners. The match went two and fro until TW had 8-6 match ball in the fourth but. it was not to be as Hill's Bushell dug in surviving several more match points and eventually winning the game 10-8. The fifth game looked wide open although with Bushells supreme fitness, it was going to be a touch opponent to break him down. It finished with Hill's Bushell winning the 5 in what turned out to be one of the decisive matches of the evening.
Match 3 (3 rd String) - Biggin Hill's John Lane took on a wily Paul from TW in what would turn out to be another key match of the evening. 100 million miles an hour Lane screamed the first 6 points leaving his opponent unsure if he was coming or going - It almost seemed as though the ball was on fire as it was crashed around the court hitting all four walls on one occasion! This tough fought out contest also ended up going to 5 with Biggin Hill's Lane grinding out a much needed 3-2 victory.
With the matches currently sitting at 2-1 to Hill the, 1 st and 2 nd strings took to the courts knowing that the match was far from over.
Match 4 (2 nd String) - Biggin Hill's Mark Lennox took on Cliff Herridge, a very orthodox player with bags of tricks up his sleeves. Lennox, playing with a broken racket, opened the match by winning the first game 9-6. The 2 nd and 3 rd went TW's way as Lennox seemed to be crumbling and certainly getting very frustrated with an unprecedented amount of errors. The 4 th game was turned around by Lennox winning it 9/1 whist the fifth seemed to go the same way as Lennox lead 7/1. Herridge's match was far from over according to him as he fought back to 5/7 then duly had a serve called 'down' as it hit the cut line. Lennox battled on and at the 2 nd time of asking, wrapped up match ball to give Hill the overall match win.
Match 5 (1 st String) was all about points (although was actually over before the 4 th match was completed). Gordon McManus was up against a very strong opponent who as I remember rightly had lost very few games in the previous winter season. McManus ending up losing 3-1 although the extra point was graciously accepted by a Biggin Hill side that has grafted their hearts out to win this one.
I wonder how important this match will be come the end of the season?
