Report: | Well, the local derby turned out to be a nailbiter. After squeaking through in the first half, the PL 1 team were keen to reprise their victory. PL 2 were struggling for a 5th player in true PL tradition, with Clever Trevor sunning himself in Jamaica. In the end, stalwart Boysy(?) doubled up for the 4ths and 2nds.
The Priory Committee roadshow, pitching up to Langley Towers this week, were in for a real treat.
First up, Rich v Miles.
John having psyched himself up to play anyone other than Adam, was ecstatic (not) with his draw. For the 1st game John looked like he didn't want to be there. First blood to Adam. After this he got into his stride though, and the Rich fitness levels looked to be suffering from his 6 week layoff. Despite looking all in after the 3rd, Adam mounted a valiant recovery attempt to pinch the 4th, but the 5th was one way traffic for John to record the first 3-2 of the evening.
Next door, McCaughan v Wise.
I could only glimpse a bit of this whilst marking the other match but it seems that Kev had this one more or less under control. This despite Nick building a biggish lead in the 3rd, only to be pegged back. So 3-0 to Kev. Clearly the promise of no alcohol from last week is bearing dividends already!
Third match London v Harris.
After the harangue-fest of the last match, the markers were clambering over themselves to get away from this one. In the end they dumped the job on the unsuspecting new boy Mike. However, after a quiet pre-match discussion between the combatants, Dave turned out to be (at least for this match) a reformed character. The result was (at least from my point of view) a cracking match to play in. The match ebbed and flowed this way and that in the usual style - Dave with all the shots, Clive grinding the rallies out, and a few too many mistakes from both parties. With it all square at 2-2 Dave finally managed to get on top to take the 5th fairly comfortably.
Meanwhile Bonner v Kimber took to the adjacent court.
This was an interesting match up. Andy having climbed from his sick bed (after a dose of food poisoning) v Kev who had just played for the 4th team on the next door court. I can only give an audio report of this one. Boysy was his usual volatile self. That about sums up my knowledge of the match, being otherwise occupied, but it was a tight one until the 5th, with Andy sneaking through in the end.
At this point with the score standing at 2-2 and all to play for, Messrs Currie v Blackman stepped up to the oche. This one was underway before I came off court, so the first two games were done and dusted, with honours even. Mike built up a decent lead in the 3rd, but Andy despite his gammy ankle was playing a blinder. Having been knocked off court by bionic Ron Terry the previous week, he wasn't about to suffer a repeat performance. He cut off many of Mike's crosscourts to good effect and generally pushed him around court well. The 3rd was duly sneaked 9-8, and the 4th looked to be a certain Blackman victory, but Mike clawed his way back to within sight of the winning post only to fall just short.
So, revenge is sweet for PL 2. Another gripping bottom of the table relegation duel is now but a memory. PL 1 must try to lure Fireman Sam back into the fold methinks. Meanwhile, will big Trev be able to overcome his Ben Offee identity crisis and reclaim his place ? Who knows the answer to such weighty questions.
In signing off this one (and for the benefit of JJ and PC), I the undersigned do hearby deny any resemblance to or affiliation with the venerable Courtspy.
And for the record im not squashboy - - AB
