Report

Report:Bexley Slump as Badger Leaves team control To vice captain Rob.

1's - Falla fought hard against James but ended up with a 3/2 loss against an opponenet in " Just enough " mode.

2's - Matt was tipped to win this one agianst Clive, but London showed why he is such a stron match player winning 3/2.

3's - Not sure how Lewis won this one. Going 2 down and winning is hardly his " thing ". Scrappy game which Michael probably deseverved to win!

4's - Rusty Rich came through to beat welsh Mark. Flashes of brilliance from Mark though. Keep going Mark it's getting there!

5's - Big well done to Tony Smith. Not played squash in 6 years, but turned out for his club at short notice. Unfortunatly Tony soon remembered that a squash ball doesn't bounce like a racket ball! But by then it was too late. Well played Kev.

Good meal afterwards followed by a rant by Rob about team captain Badger going on holiday to the gay capital of the world for a holiday !! and how much he is looking forward to the team trip to Dulwich next week - Expect a sudden drop in temperature around next Tuesday then ! Hope someone remembers to turn the excellent new radiators on around lunch time and don't forget to turn the thermostat up on the showers. Can't wait to get hammered by Ian again. Hmmm...maybe it's just sour grapes !!

[edit]
You must have been really worried by what I was going to write Rob. This has got to be the quickest appearing match report on record from Bexley. I'd written it too, and was just getting ready for a copy and paste. What do you reckon then, do you fancy a balanced view from the opposition? The hell with it. I'm not wasting that effort. Herewith the independently crafted view of PL - Clive.

PL1 travelled to a much weakened Bexley, thankful that they could draft in "Just Enough James" as a reserve after Andy B cried off sick, and Kev climbed off his hospital bed to put his dodgy kness through some more punishment.

With Slack off living up to his nickname (if you believe Rob Lewis - of which more later - sorry Rob), Mark Steeden at the Nationals, and Steph Brind also unavailable, Bexley were struggling big time. Despite this they put up a battling performance.

First on Green v the Author.
Matt was appearing here at something approaching his proper level at last. There's been a few lower order players getting a nasty shock finding him at no.4, and yours truly found out why! Having been soundly trounced in the 1st, and somehow escaped with the 2nd from 5-8 down, much work was left to be done. A long sequence of hand outs with no points being gained probably helped the Author's cause at the start of the 3rd. Despite eventually being soundly beaten again by the end of the game, the redoubtable PL coaching staff (this time in the person of JEJ) was enlisted to try and come up with a game plan. To say this was successful would be an understatement. The Author stuck manfully to the advice and proceeded to drop one more point to run out a 3-2 winner. Not quite sure how I got out of this one, but if Matt can play like this on "a couple of games since Xmas", I wish his upcoming opponents good luck.

Next door, Latcham v Rich.
As usual Adam's game passed me by, so I can only really go by the scores and a (paraphrased) throwaway comment from one of Mark's teammates that Mark "can hit the ball really well but can't run after it". At any rate Adam kept his head down to record a good 3-1 win.

Next on Lewis v Currie.
Again, didn't see this, but by all accounts it was an interesting scrap. Mike as usual started well going 2-0 up, and reports had it that Robert's racket(s) visited every part of the court, usually without him attached to it. Despite this, the most unlikely comeback kid hung on in there, using his undoubted reserves of speed and fitness to turn the game around and sneak through for a 3-2 victory.

So, now it was Falla v "Just Enough James".
Having climbed off his sickbed to turn out for PL, JEJ looked to have made a good recovery from his debilitating 24hr bug to take a two game lead against the dogged SteveO. This however didn't allow for the usual brinkmanship and Steve got back the 3rd, and followed this by taking the 4th to love (with JEJ only getting a single hand-in). Right, so the sharp end of the match and JEJ eased onto the throttle just enough to pull away and record a 3-2 win.

Last on Smith v McCaughan.
Kev looked mighty relieved when told that his opponents last game of squash was when the old clubhouse at Bexley was still standing. If that's true, then Tony must have been pretty useful. Despite the scoreline, Kev didn't have it all his own way, and had to haul those creaking limbs all around the court, managing to exploit his opponents slight lack of mobility to the front to good effect. So a 3-0 win for Kev, and suddenly all's well with the world for PL.

So, off we all trot to the bar for the usual high quality (and in this case temperature) Bexley meal, to be regaled first by the lewd contents of the Rich mobile Inbox, followed by our old mate Lewis's views on a range of diverse topics including his commuting troubles, the exact dimensions of the revised London Congestion Zone, and culminating in his views on various squash clubs around the county. It appears that Dulwich is his favourite club, and apparently the pony-tailed one is his favourite opponent (well you're a big boy now Rob so you should be safe). Lastly some speculation on the purpose of the Slack holiday. Suffice it to say that (a) Rob seemed keen that none of his comments should make it into the match report, and (b) how shall I tactfully put this - that Rob assumed Slack had taken a collection of handkerchiefs with him to LA.
