Report

Report: Age and experience meets youth and fitness!!! Only one winner - the Beckenham youth team, led by old hand Ian. First up, Alastair v Abhay. Good match, closer than scores showed, but Abhay too quick and accurate, put winners away well at the front of the court - third game closer where Alastair starting getting better lengths and winning more hand-ins, but not enough, Abhay a good winner. Paul Roberts v Harry was almost exactly the same, with Harry putting Paul under so much pressure with good length shots and Harry picking up Pauls drops and boasts and raced to a 2 game lead. Only when Harry was 9-3 up did Paul start to play more freely and battled his way back to 6-8, before losing 9-6. Harry deserved winner. Meanwhile hurricane Richard made hard work of losing to Nick - had lots of opportunities to take the initiative only to hit the tin or put the ball back to Nick who then won the point. Richard has speed around the court, agood eye for the ball but something in his head doesn't work!!! Nick stayed consistent, got tighter and tighter with his shots and putting away his winners won the 3rd comfortably. Brian was last on - racing in as usual, looking a cross between Tommy Cooper and a Cave man who's just woken up in the 21st century. He also played liked it !! one minute brilliant, well for a few seconds, next minute all over the place, great winners and equally impressive tins - he needed a tea break. Meanwhile, Ian played his usual consistent and patient game, often wrong-footing Brain and hitting consistent half court back-hand drop winners. Brian was getting better but not before losing 3-0. I've left our secret weapon Mark to the end. Mark defies the laws of gravity and started like a racehorse with the touch of a ballerina - putting winners away and moving Fergus around the court and as a consequence won the first 9/6 winning the teams only point of the evening. By the 2nd game, Fergus realised he needed to up his game - which he did, improved his retrieving and taking advantage of Marks loose shots, winning the next 3 games, pretty comfortably, although Mark with his new fitness programme in place did make a good game of the 4tyh, losing 9-6. When the opposition had gone home to to finish their homewor, Bromley discussed their excuses at the bar - injuries, not playing enough, courts too clean, the new shirts a straight jacket - and we will do better next time!! Who are they kidding? In the end, well done Beckenham, worthy winners, sporting and Young!!!
