Report: | After the usual Tuesday for both captains, many hasty revisions were made to both teams during the course of the day. Both prospective no.1's were busy playing National League for the same team, Dulwichski star no.2 was unavailable and PL stalwart Adam Rich was variously not playing, playing, then not playing again.
So, just another regular match day, and Dulwich unable to field a 5th player. Some might say this was the only way PL would get into the lead in a match. Some might be right if they'd watched this unfold.
First up, the Author v Marlow.
This was a fairly standard affair. The 1st game seemed to be a contest to discover who could play the least badly. The Author narrowly won that battle, and so it continued. It has to be said a few major flukes contributed to the winning of games one and two before the Author finally started to get into his stride, taking the 3rd fairly comfortably for a 3-0 win.
So, 2-0 up and all of a sudden life looks good again. Then, McCaughan v Armstrong.
Since this was played on the Timbuktu court 4, I only saw the end of this one. Kev did not look a happy bunny. His dodgy knees seemed to be giving him some gyp, and that combined with Ian's usual tactic of trying to knock the covering off the ball on every shot were contributing to a bad day at the office. Ian's a tricky customer at the best of times, and had too much for a dispirited Kev on this occasion.
Next up on the main complex - Fink v Harsum.
The "Eyeball" seemed to have retained only the physical scars of his last encounter with PL (and a mortified Kev didn't even realise it was him until he'd gone home such was the brief period of time that they were on court together).
This was a strange kind of match. It lasted a long time, contained some good rallies mixed in with a lot of mistakes from Chris in particular, and it looked as though neither of them could face the prospect of winning it. Chris lost the 3rd after a 5-1 then 8-5 lead got away from him. In a mirror image of this, Steve did exactly the same thing in the 4th. Chris continued to battle away though, and implemented the coaching staff's advice to good effect to eventually run out a 3-2 winner.
This was just as well, as on the other court Currie v Brownsden was taking place.
Due to marking duties I didn't see this one but will have to rely of Mike's summary of proceedings. He felt (and I'm sure Will will second this) that Will was the best player he had ever seen anywhere on a squash court (once the 1st game was out of the way). His description of Will burying winners from all angle sounds like someone else to me, but who am I to argue. Anyway, the upshot was a 3-1 win for Will and lots of grief for the Eyeball for letting match points get away from him in the 4th.
So, at last, the team that couldn't buy a win scrapes some points onto the board. Tough games to follow - still no sign of the enigmatic AFKAW, Kev's off to the knee specialist, (spectator) Adam sounds like he has H5N1. I'm starting to feel a Mourinho moment coming on (only without the cash reserves to back me up).
Just to round things off nicely, AGFB felt moved to relate BH's demolition of BLTC by text. Well done boys, the Limpsfield conveyor belt seems to have no limits! |
