Report: | Since El Capitano seems to be unusually reticent this week I suppose I'd better step into the breech, and relate the sad news of yet another PL disaster.
This was a match that promised at least some return for PL at various stages despite the "weakened" BCC lineup sporting that most makeweight of substitutes (NOT) Adam Pyne. This shows some dedication, to travel over from Windsor for a Priory game, and it paid off big-time for El Cap's boys.
First up Tucker v McCaughan.
Despite a close first game and a few rueful looks at the marker towards the end from Kev, JT snuck the 1st game before going into overdrive in 2nd, and looking odds on for a 3-0. Not to be. Kev hung in there well and battled back to take the next two relatively comfortably. Sadly for PL, JT had obviously been saving himself for a final push, and ran out well ahead in the 5th to take the match.
Next door - El CApitano v Rich.
Ian looked to be strangely subdued at the start of this match. Adam, it has to be said was on fire to start with, having El Cap all over the place with tight and disciplined squash. This included taking the ball fairly early, and despite looking to be on for an easy victory, Adam's fitness levels weren't quite man enough for the job. Ian fought back, and assisted by too many tins from a flagging Adam, ran out a comfortable winner in the 5th.
So, once more backs to the wall. Next up Ryall v The Author.
Another battle royal between old (very in one case) adversaries. This was a good one to play in even if the result didn't go the right way for my taste. Lewy sometimes has a tendency to go walkabout concentration-wise in the middle of a match, but not on this occasion.
The match appeared to go on forever. Long hard rallies, scoreline going this way and that, but a tired spell from the author in the 3rd, from 6-2 up to lose the game, and a succession of overhead nicks in the 5th from Lewy, saw the youngster emerge victorious.
Next door, Pyne v Currie.
Didn't see any of this due to playing duties, but it sounds from my sources as though Adam indulged in his usual brand of ultra laid back squash to comfortably win this one 3-0. Having been on the receiving end of this kind of treatment before I can sympathise with Mike, who probably felt he was having the p*ss taken out of him. I've arrived at the conclusion over many years that this is just Adam's way of playing (so tell me I'm wrong Adam). Not a bad sub at no.2.
Last on (and also unseen by me since I was off after this one too), Dutch Prodigy v Bonner.
Again, I can only judge this from the scoreline, but it looks to have been a very even match, with DP being dropped down the order to protect his iffy hamstring, outlasting Andy who probably had his mind elsewhere.
So, another stunning result for PL. Lots of effort from all for scant reward, with four 3-2 losses. Still, onwards and hopefully upwards. BCC put on their usual spread afterwards, and it was an enjoyable if ultimately fruitless evening. |
