Report

Report:PL just about managed to avoid being the victims of the engineered result of the season last night. Picture the scene if you will (Limpsfield/BH boys - think Horley), the author is greeted with "are you no.1 then?", answer - no, "who is?", answer - JEJ, "in that case I'm no.2".

Without further ado, messrs London v Stabler take to the court.
The author, whilst still feeling that it was high time that captains (independently) wrote their teams down before the players all arrive, to avoid the above situation, felt it was a good time to try and build on his first half 3-0 win. Sadly not to be. Despite a lot of effort from the author, Sam was quickly into his stride, and the author turned in a well meaning but nevertheless abysmal performance to go down 3-0, losing leads in both the 2nd and 3rd in the process.

Next door Rich v Beevers.
In time honoured fashion, didn't see Adam's game but it looks as though Darren is on a roll now and despite a blip in the 2nd was a bit too strong for Adam on this occasion.

Next on was JEJ v the victim of the Stabler decison - Kimpton.
This was a pretty good match. Rich manfully hurled himself repeatedly from front to back of the court, and JEJ was obviously trying to give the lie to his nickname on this occasion. Some good squash from both players, but JEJ's deception proved a bit too much for Rich. 3-0 to James.

Meanwhile next door, Fink v Jeal.
This looked as though it was going to be an interesting encounter. The upcoming "superstar" against veteran (sorry Chris) shotmaker. As it turned out, Chris had a bit too much nous for Ted. I don't think Ted quite expected the variety of short stuff and overhead knicks that came his way. Those of us that have seen Chris produce this kind of stuff repeatedly over the years were unsurprised, but Ted expended rather too much of his focus on his annoyance at losing points and decisions he didn't agree with. So a cultured 3-1 to Chris.

So, now we're back to 2-2 and all to play for. Currie v Willmor.
Proably the match of the night, this one.
Mike had been extensively briefed on what to expect from the the racket of the wily Willmor, but still experienced the shock that so many have over the years on their first encounter with him. Pete was up to speed straight away, with too many errors from the Currie racket. 2-0 up and looking comfortable. Cue change of pace. Mike, suitably fortified with advice from the PL coaching staff, decided to dispense with a good bit of the short stuff, and step up the pace and pressure. This seemed to be just the ticket, as he powered his way back to win the 3rd and take a commanding 7-2 lead in the 4th. Peter dug in well here, and clawed his way back to match ball at 8-7. Despite vocal support from his teammates (with the expected exception trying to break a racketball in the dark on the next door court), Pete was unable to convert this momentum, and Mike sneaked through to take it to a decider.
The 5th was one way traffic, with Mike powering through to complete a good comeback and sneak PL through to another narrow victory.

So, PL managed to keep their distance from the relegation zone once again. The injury list is being coped with (just). AFKAW reported that he'd done his ankle in and is unlikely to be available again this season, Andy B is just up off his sick-bed and Kev is just pleased to give those knees a rest.

Fine performances from Mike and Chris helped PL save the day, and Chris's biggest concern in the bar afterwards seemed to be the disappearance of his photo alongside Chris Dittmar at the grand unveiling of court 3 from a few (read lots of) years back. Having watched those two play on that day, Chris was probably still remembering the rolling knick winner he surprised the world no.2 with in the first point!
