Report

Report:PL visited the wilds of Sandford Road in last man standing mode. Kev has finally succumbed to those dodgy knees and JEJ was duly drafted in to bolster the top end of the order.

First on, once again in a reversal of the normal situation from previous years - Hammerton v London Senior.
The author once again found himself pressed into service at an early stage in the match. The PL team seems to get later every week! The 1st was a tight affair with honours just about even, Ian sneaking it at the death. Come the 2nd, the author was soon in the zone and proceeded to reel off the next two games for the sake of a couple of points.
Never one to lie down though, Ian fought back well in the 4th which the author eventually eased through to take 9-7 giving PL an early boost.

Next door were The Bionic Man v Rich.
Only saw the end of this one (surprise). Adam had gone 2-0 up and presumably thought he was on easy street. By this time though, Bionic Ron was taking advantage of his newly cleaned up knee to battle back and take it to a 5th game. Adam looked a bit dejected throughout this game, and Ron duly forged ahead to level the match score with a 3-2 win.

Next up, Lindsey v JEJ.
Colin really didn't look too happy throughout this match. Having come down amongst us southern softies apparently with a winning streak as long as the Forth Bridge, he's been finding it tough at the top. Although the games were fairly close scorewise, the casual observer would have been in little doubt that this was largely due to a lot of tins from JEJ, who seems to be suffering from a surfeit of coaching when coming into matches these days. Nevertheless, Colin battled away manfully and it made for a good spectacle, with plenty of hard hitting from both players. In the end JEJ eased through 3-0.

Meanwhile Tubby Tel v Bonner was kicking off next door.
This started off at a pretty relaxed pace (maybe due to the inability of the heater thermostats to detect that it was already boiling on both courts). Tubby got into his stride early on, wielding the mighty teardrop CTS to good effect as he took the 1st pretty comfortably. From this point on though the tide turned. Andy pulled back the 2nd 9-7 and from here on in gradually accelerated away to record a 3-1 win and ensure that the final match was for points only.

Last on Palmer v Late Boy Currie.
Mike excelled himself even by his own timekeeping standards, but thankfully arrived in time to participate in the final match of the evening. In his usual fashion LB went off at 100mph, blasting Keith off the court in the 1st. As with a few of the matches though, the tables were turned in the 2nd. LB made too many errors, particularly on the backhand short stuff, and Keith kept his head down to take the next two pretty easily.
After exhortations from the PL backroom team to rely on his power hitting LB came out and started larruping the ball around at a fair old clip in the 4th. Despite this, Keith got himself to match ball at 8-4. Cue recovery. Keith always likes to get his money's worth, and it looked like he might be going to extend his collection of 3-2's. LB battled back to 8-8 by nearly knocking the covering off the ball, but sadly for PL was unable to cross the finish line, with Keith finally deciding that perhaps 3-1 was enough for a change.

The rest of the evening was spent trying to work out what "Smith" was all about on the giant telly in the bar, whilst partaking of the usual high standard of Tubby Tel cuisine - Jambalaya(?) in this case (I thought that was the Carpenters but what do I know). The trip home was rounded off with the usual flurry of texts from around Kent. AGFB with his usual gloat (not surprised with a team like that!!) and a rather less happy Sly Fox. So, it's into the last two weeks of the season (at least for us Cup cannon fodder), and nothing to play for.
