Report

Report: BCC welcomed Park Langley 4 to the lane last night. First on court was Steve vs Luke. Steve was determined to put in a good performance after a disappointing masters and he didn’t disappoint. Steve was on fire, hitting great length and delicate drops not giving Luke a chance to settle into his rhythm. Steve stormed the first. The 2nd was a tighter affair with both player only a point apart all the way to 7-7 but Steve’s drop shot again was the shot that won him the game. 2-0. Super stevie Pusey was on fire in the 3rd and didn’t give Luke the opportunity to get in to his stride. Steve attacked from the 1st point and it paid off taking the 3rd 9-1. 1-0 BCC.
Ross vs Antony. We’d had to call on the 4th team as out normal No4 was away. So Ross who was just back from a 2week extravaganza in turkey got the short straw. Both players got off to a good start but unfortunately Antony made a few unforced errors at key times and Ross took the 1st 9-4. The 2nd was so nearly a carbon copy of the first it was very close up to 4-4 then Ross hit some great winners to get to 8-5, but Antony cut out the mistakes and played some quality squash. With the ball deep in the back hand corner Ross would cover the drive, ready for the volley but Antony played a couple of fantastic cross court drops that had Ross glued to the spot and the game was tied at 8-8. I thought Ross was looking a bit tired and was wondering if the holiday was catching him up but ever the fighter he dug deep and hit 3 great shots to take the 2nd 10-8. The 3rd was another great game. Good squash from both players but Ross’s extra power was just enough to see him over the line. 2-0 BCC. I get to see any of this game due to marking and playing but by the length of time they were on court and the score sheet it was a well fought battle. Our very own British open champ who was fresh off defending her title, and wearing her England kit (ooooooohhhhh) against the young wippersnapper Rhys, and it was Rhys who got off to the best start chopping keels 9-1. The 2nd keels played a lot more controlled squash thanks to a bit of coaching from Lewis and she started to lengthen the rallies working the lungs of Rhys. Keels too the 2nd 10-8. Again more words from Lewis “calm it down” concertante on hitting good length but keels calmed it down too much and Rhys chopped her again 9-2. But keels didn’t give up and in the 4th just managed to keep her nose in front through a mammoth game and took it 10-8. Fifth and final game was very nip and tuck. Rhys looking like he was going to keel over, keeleys face had gone a patchy pink colour with the amount of effort that these two had both put in, but Keeley just had the fitness on Rhys and took the 5th 9-6. 3-0 BCC.
Scott vs Nolan. I came up against Nolan a year ago and know how much he’s improved. He’s always had speed (which I don’t) but now his technique has improved I took this game very seriously and even played someone who is as quick as Nolan to practice hitting the ball as close as I could to the wall to force the errors as I knew my fitness wasn’t going to do it for me. I got off to a good start taking a 6-3 lead but Nolan came back to 7-6. But I managed to scrap the last couple of points. 9-7. The 2nd it was Nolan who started like a rocket taking a 6-2 lead all I could do was hit those 3 boards along the side wall that the late great Ken Cotton drummed into us to hit and it worked I fought back and won the game 9-6. The third was a bit easier but I couldn’t relax as a fourth would have played into the much fitter Nolan’s hands. I took it 9-2.
Stewart vs Michael. Stew isn’t in the best form at the mo but that isnt to take away from the great squash that Michael played. Stewart’s cross courts weren’t wide enough and it played into his opponents hands and was put away. 1game 9-5 Park Langley. The 2nd was much the same. Michael hitting good winners and the normal whizzy Stewart wasn’t on the court and Michael took it 9-1. Stewart’s normal game returned for the 3rd playing positive drops and deceptive drives left Michael chasing shadows. Stew took the 3rd 9-6. Was this to be one of stew famous come backs..............no is the answer. His cross courts weren’t wide enough and Michael picked them off with ease. 9-2 and match Park Langley. I do have to report on one rally and one of the best shots I’ve ever seen. Michael is leading 6-2 in the forth and a long fast rally is happening. Stewart is working hard and puts in a weak crosscourt to the forehand side. Michael plays a volley drop. Stew at full stretch skids in and some how gets a great forehand crosscourt from the drop but leaves himself a spectator as he’s now sitting in the front forehand corner against the side wall. Michael is very fast and sprints to the back, backhand corner and manages to dig a boast. Stew is still sitting in the front FH corner and watches the boast come his way, where he managed to VOLLEY drop it sitting on his Arse. This was a better shot than the Colombian cannonball Rodriguez and should win shot of the season.

Always a good night with the PL boys. See you on the return.
