Report: | Our 3rd home game in a row and we knew it was going to be a tough one as BCC3 welcomed Nuffield to the lane.
First up was myself vs Darren. As non of my team had arrived by 8 I was
forced to go on 1st. Not my favourite spot. Darren had an exceptional touch and after a good start from myself he reeled me in and took the 1st 10-8. The 2nd was just as tight. Darren 9-7. I’m 2-0 down and I can’t get the ball past him. In the 3rd I put extra effort in to get in front of the big man and I took the game 9-3. More effort needed after going 4-0 down in the 4th and I came through to win 9-6. The 5th is when Darren’s big reach, deception and touch came to the top. I was out of running and Darren picked me off and won the 5th 9-6. Another hour plus match witch we both didn’t want. I wish I’d taken him up on the best of 3 match. Great game.
2nd on was Steve bs Karin. I really wanted to see this match as I knew how much this meant to Steve. He never lets us down. He came out of the blocks flying keeping the 1st game to love. 2nd game steve again was at it. Forget Vardy. Pusey is on fire. And he chopped the 2nd 9-4. In the 3rd steve took a commanding 7-2 lead and looked to have the match sown up but Karin had other ideas and fought her way back to 7-7. After a couple of exchanges steve got the points he needed and took the 3rd 9-7
Danny vs Paul. Another game I didn’t get to see as I was keeping Darren out of the bar.
Danny has been working hard on his game and I cannot remember the last time he lost. His cheat striking of the ball will be hard for any No4 to get close to him. Dan got out to a good start taking a 4-0 lead only for Paul to make a fight back and get to 5-4. Danny seems to be able to change gear and did so winning the next 5 points, 1st game Danny 9-5. The 2nd saw Danny take a 6-2 lead but Paul again would give up and got back to 6-7. Paul then felt the extra effort and it gave Danny his chance and “the showboat” took the game 9-6. The 3rd was much the same as the 1st and 2nd with Danny taking a commanding 8-2 lead. Paul saved 2match balls and started his come back getting within one point to force Danny to call but Danny dig deep and took it 9-7
Stewart vs Andrew. This was a match up of two players who have an abundance of experience. It took stew a few points to get into the game. Giving away cheap points. Then he found his game and using his deception had Andrew twisting and turning and took the 1st 9-6 The 2nd stew changed his tactics and pushed the ball to the back a lot more before pushing the ball short and forcing Andrew into errors. Stew 9-2 2-0. When stew is on his game he is very hard to beat. This night stew was on his game. And in the 3rd he took a very quick 7-0 lead. Could Andrew make a dramatic come back....... no was the answer. Stew closed out the match 9-0.
Last on was Our Keels vs Fergus. I’d been told by keels in the week how quick and fit Fergus was and JEEEEZ she wasn’t wrong. But then our girl from SE9 won’t give up easily. Fergus won the 1st 5-9 But keels had 14 services. The 2nd was a bit more of a one sided affair when Fergus up the pace and played some excellent squash. Fergus cruised into a 2-0 lead. I was expecting a 3-0 to Fergus but keels had other ideas. She picked the pace up an caught Fergus napping. Keels worked hard for every point. Pushing her body to the limit. Keels and myself have nicknames which is stinky. I call her it as she always smells nice, she calls me as I normally smell like a wet dog. Unfortunately on this occasion on a deep lunge into the front BH corner. Keels dropped a cheeky bottom burp. This bought out the biggest laugh of the season. Beating stews sitting backhand drop (See Park Langley Report). Keels tried to say that it was something else but the very next point the “floor creaked” again and another point was gained by keels. She took the 3rd 9-6 The forth game Fergus started to command the middle again and was playing some good adaptive shots. Cleverly disguised BH crosscourt drops had keels. Scrambling. After a couple of hard fought rallies Fergus got the points needed and closed out the match. It was only at this point we saw how much he’d put into it. The effort these two great players put in was amazing. A hard fought match where both teams were up for the battle. Really looking forward to the return. A really nice team. Fair and competitive.
Apologies to Karin for grammar and spelling. I found out that she was a teacher. I’m a plumber who skived 2 years of school. ;) x |
