Report

Report:Acacia Have only won twice this season; courtesy of Knole Park. I can't believe it! 35 points - thank you very much!

'PJ' peg-leg Rutherford had dropped down to 2 to protect his injury. His marathon with arch rival Bob was to last most of the night on one court while the other saw four one-sided affairs. If 'PJ' could have nicked the second against the run of play, things might have been different. But on this occasion, Bob just got more of the breaks than a woefully unfit 'PJ'. The fifth was typical of the whole match, with any result possible until the end.

On the other court, Knole had taken a 2-0 lead as Jerry won the last four points from 5-all in each of the three games. (Don't you know it's first to nine, Marc?) Then Chris beat an equally hard-hitting Steve to the punch - the sparse crowd managing to keep busy by counting the number of drops shots played by two young fit players - I counted none, but each player claimed the other had played at least one.

So, with Knole 2-0 up and 'PJ'/Bob going all the way to the wire, it was just left to Mike and Andy, Acacia's two most reliable youths, to wrap up the victory for the home team.

Andy's light left-handed touch was more than Gary could cope with once the heaters had been turned off. Gary got his nose in front briefly in the second, but didn't seem to know how.

Then Mike entertained Tom to a master class, even though Tom nearly stole the third. At 0-2 and 0-7 Tom stooped to catch the ball at the front just before it hit the ground for the second time - and just before Mike's racket would have taken his hand off. Decision - 'no let', Mike. 'I don't think you would have got there'.

A fair cop, Acacia. Knole go away happy; having picked up 3 more points than in their 5-0 drubbing first time around. Acacia might need to beat some other teams just to show they are serious about Division 2 ;-)

[P.S. I can't let this pleasant night pass without a brief comment or two on marking. Sorry!

Mike B did an outstanding job with the big fight -'PJ' on his best behaviour too. But Mike's excuse was a bit lame - 'I've known 'PJ' since I was young'.

Marc G, that was an outrageous appeal for a let! You've hit the ball down into the tin - so hard, I can still hear it ringing. Your follow through has then almost gone 270 degrees round to hit Jerry standing in the far corner. 'Contact', says Marc. Andy, what were you thinking of - anything for a quiet night?]
