Report: | The penultimate game of the season with BCC2 welcoming Old Wilstonians to the Lane. Old Wilstonians duffed up BCC2 on the last two meetings, so BCC had something to prove.
First up. The show boat vs Luke. Danny has kept up his training and is playing well. He has been a major part in getting us to the top of the table. Could he keep Luke from upsetting his impeccable season. Dan got off to a very positive start and hit the ball sweet and to a good length. Luke had speed in abundance but couldn’t match Danny’s racket skills and the show boat took the first 9-0. The second saw Danny keep up the pressure on Luke moving him around the court. Like kept retrieving but as soon as he left it loose Danny’s deception would send Luke the wrong way. SB 9-0. This is where Danny’s extra work has made his game better. He seems to have a lot more energy going into the 3rd. He was still hitting very good lengths and volleying at every opportunity. Could he get the golden bagel and shut the match out 27-0? Yes he could with a barrage of clean hits like couldn’t get the ball out of the back corners. Well played Showboat.
Next up was the battle of the captains. Scott bs Dave. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. I’d played dave before and I knew how fast he was. The 1st game was one of the longest games I’d ever played. Neither of us made a lot of unforced errors and couple that with the stuff dave was retrieving made the game last over 20 minutes and I covered 1.2km and I wasn’t doing as much running as dave. The stuff he got back was crazy. I found myself 7-2 down and couldn’t work out how to get the points I needed so decided just to keep attacking the loose lengths with volly drops and keep him running. I must have worked as I clawed it back and took the 1st 9-7. Second game saw me take the early lead getting to 7-2. The rally lengths had dropped but the pace had picked up. Dave had also started to play a drop shot which was moving me more to the front. This did leave the court open but it had to be a perfect width and length to beat him as he could cover the length of the court quicker than Usain Bolt on crack. He battled back to to 6-7 and I hit 3 lucky tight shots and with dave’s energy levels low th errors occurred. 9-6 2-0 BCC. The first two games finally took their toll and a few more errors started to creep in. I won the 3rd 9-2. A really good game to play in.
Mcmeckonator vs Gerald. Ian is a player who gives 100% every week and has been pivotal to getting us to the top. Ian came out of the blocks flying hitting the ball hard and low and chopping in his trademark half drop half kill shot. Some times going straight sometimes dealing his wrist and flicking them cross court. As quick as Gerald is he couldn’t get them back. Ian won the first 9-2. The big man didn’t take his foot off the gas (which sometimes he should as he runs for a ball, hits it then smashes into the wall, which ricochets him back towards the middle of the court. It’s like watching a human pinball machine. I think one day he’ll knock courts 2&3 into one big court) i digress, he kept the pressure up on Gerald with brutal hitting and the pace was just a little to fast for the man from old wills. The meckmeckonator took the 2nd 9-3. The third saw Gerald get off to a better start. His deceptive boast started to push Ian out of position and leave him the space to push the ball deep and win some good points. He took a 5-2 Lead and was looking stronger. The big man saw this and adjusted his tee position standing further up the court to cover the boast. He battled back and closed out the match. 3-0.
Mrs Stinky vs Nick. Having played nick in the 1st half I knew it had the potential of being a bit of a banana skin. The first few exchanges were even. Keels hitting a nice tight length and very much like his brother nick would get every short ball or hard cross court. Keeley got a 5-0 lead and was looking comfortable, but in typical Thompson brother style they don’t give up and nick fought back to 4-5. The rally’s were long and fast. Keels kept the ball tight which made it hard for nicks technique to get off the wall and that forced the errors. Keels 9-4. Nick started the second better. His length was deeper and he started to take the ball earlier playing nice backhand volly drops and a couple of cheeky cross court knicks. Stinks slowed the pace of the rallies using a soft touch and hight. This didn’t suit nicks game. He feeds off pace and his drives became loose and keels chopped in the winning shots. The game ball was a loose shot from nick for Keeley to power a tight forehand drive. Nick asked for the let, but the marker, who’s very good, I must add denied the let saying the interference was his own doing and the line was behind keeley #fact ;). The third game saw keels get control early. Dominating the pace and using all the strings as she cut in the winning drop shots. Nick did try and up the pace of the rally but keel experience saw her close out the match 3-0. This win actually secured the top spot in the league and I was happy that Keeley done it as she’s had a tough run of results of late. She’s our champ.
Last up was the big one. Bromley’s Pip long stocking vs hany tin laden. The noise of the ball being hit so hard in the warm up attracted members from the bar. With a packed balcony to see to see two of the best No1s go head the 1st rally was a good one. Plenty of great lengths. Plenty of amazing shots by hany. Plenty of amazing pick ups by pip. Pip won the 1st point. Then hany went for the Knick off the return of serve and hit the tin. After a few more rallies hany, who said he’d been short of court time, started going for the lights out shot. Where most mortal folks wouldn’t get near his shots, pip isn’t normal. He will launch himself head first fully extended towards the front wall little bit like Paul Coll but with a lot less talent. Pip took the first 9-2. The second saw the continuation of the hard hitting. Hany still going for the outrageous and pip outrageously getting them. I have to give pip his due he did smash a couple of beautiful lights out dead knicks. With the rallies hard and fast this was playing into pips kind of game. With hany breathing hard the shot selection started to let hany down. Pip won the second 9-2. The third was a copy of the second with the rallies being slightly shorter as hanys levels were dropping faster than an me jumping off the top board at the swimming pool. Pip was still full of running and he closed the match out 3-0.
A great night for BCC2. We look forward to the cup game in two weeks.
