Report

Report:Cascades have been having a difficult season winning only one fixture this far. To see them arrive on time and in happy spirits was uplifting and the whole evening carried on in a friendly light-hearted manner which both teams seemed to enjoy.

The fixture got off to a prompt start with Julian taking on Mark at number 5. Julian was wearing his sensible squash head and despite not volleying enough to completely dominate, was moving Mark around the court with a combination of longish drives and shortish dropshots. Mark was having traction problems of Winter Olympic proportions and because he was doing the running this was reflected in the first two games sliding away from him 9-2 9-2. Cascades management reacted immediately by finding a nice pair of shiny new blue shoes on the feet of their number one. These were installed on Mark, who set off with great resolve only to find that Julian had gained in confidence and was playing even better. 9-0 to Julian to show that equipment is only part of the story.

On the other court O’Brien was taking on the Poultwood Cannon. The match was over quickly, I didn’t see it due to marking commitments, but by all accounts Giles was in control throughout.

Giles had decided that Herman was getting too many easy games and with McLeod missing this was an opportunity to give him a run out in the number one slot. So it was Jake and John to do battle at two. Jake was rusty in the knock up after a week disrupted by man-flu. However, the cobwebs cleared for a trademark first game of perfect kills resulting in a 9-0 score line. Only one way to go from 9-0 and the second had longer rallys as John attempted to break up Jake’s rhythm. Still Jake looked comfortable taking the game 9-6. The next game was John’s best as he used his short game to disrupt. Jake began to make mistakes trying to force one shot winners. John took the game 9-6. Jake’s mistakes continued in the forth to allow John to draw level at 2-2. Jake had plenty in reserve for the fifth and without ever looking completely in control steadied the ship to win 9-3.

Craig reacquired the team shoes to take on the Poultwood superstar and housewives pin-up Herman at one. I was playing, so again no witness report (must get a bigger news team). Business as usual though with Herman peaking for a 3-0 victory.

Finally then the number 4 tie. Super-sub Paul Higgs, keen to support his quest for a regular team place, against Keith Holland. Some of Paul’s shots are irretrievable and give some inkling of his shady past as a nationally ranked junior. Some of Paul’s shots are very down and give some inkling of his preference for spectacular multi-angle kills where simple division 2 shots would do. However all this makes it very entertaining to watch. Paul was too strong in a number of departments but this did not seem to faze his opponent and the reward was a point savaged for the visiting side.

The fixture was finished by 9:30 but the food wasn’t coming until 10:00, so a number of 4 on a court and 1 on 1 round robins ensued. The exception was Herman who had played quite enough squash for this week!
