Report: | With Karen Hume sick and Mandy Akin injured Cannons were on the back foot before the fixture began. Albert Akin would be filling in at 2, but no player at five was sure to make holding at bay a full strength Poultwood difficult.
Giles verses Ted at four proved to be the match of the fixture as the youngster got off to a great start winning the first 9-0. He also sneaked the second 10-8. Then Giles performed an impressive fight back 9-1 9-2 and the match was all square. Normally in these situations you would expect the more experienced (older) player to win and Giles was visibly older. In this case what resulted was a very good game to watch and a good win for Ted.
Meanwhile, Herman made quick work of the Cannons captain Rob. Rob having trouble staying with the pace and accuracy of Herman’s play.
Albert verses Jake ensued. You could tell from the knock up that Albert was not going to let Jake dictate the pace of the match. This proved to be the pattern, with Albert trying to slow it down and lifting the ball at every opportunity and Jake trying to find a bit more pace and rhythm. What resulted was a scrappy game. Albert’s tactics were well judged and even better executed. Jake was unable to concentrate at times and made a lot of unforced errors. Albert scraped home 9-7 in the 5th.
Zeb Young and Paul McLeod had one of those matches where only one player was playing at any one time. In the first two Paul played and Zeb didn’t 9-2 9-3. In the next two Zeb took control and Paul capitulated 9-1 9-3. The last game should have been close then but in the event Paul was dominant 9-3.
So despite the fixture ending a narrow 3-2 to Poultwood, Poultwood came away with 18 points to Cannons’ 3 which shows that games make prizes in this league.
