Away Report

Away Report:'A good evening vs Beckenham 4, a mix of veterans and juniors. First off Darius vs Cathy, more than twice his age but still able to pack a punch with excellent length and width. Darius stayed with her for consistency to start with, taking the first game but after his shoe lace broke he couldn’t quite regain his composure and was overhauled to lose 1-3. Meanwhile Mike won a tough first game with Geoff (16-14) but his wider range of shot removed the resistance and our Player of the Month (Nov) won 3-0. Then the fun started. Brian seemed to know he could beat Jon and so extended the rallies. Nevertheless Jon’s beach-tennis-style drop shot caught Brian several times. Another 3-0 win and Brian loved it. Tim has always found playing juniors a problem, partly as they tend to run between his legs, or so it seemed in his first game vs Joel (11 yrs old) who won it 15-11. Tim picked up some momentum, length and pace, winning the next 3 games but was still caught by some accurate drop shots. The most enthralling match was David’s vs Freddie (not the Dreamer) all of 13 or 14. Poor David, barely recovered from his pre-Christmas bender the night before, seemed not to know what day it was, blinking like Bambi when the ball whizzed past him or was dropped in front of him. In a see-saw match, David seemed to have mastered the length game but succumbed to weariness and less obvious symptoms in the 5th, much to Freddy’s youthful satisfaction. There will be lots more to come.'
