Report: | Tonbridge on a winter’s night and a chance for Poultwood to avenge what they believed to be their worst collective performance of the first half. Was it all about home court advantage or were they just not good enough?
Julian fresh from a week skiing and salsa dancing got off to an excellent start and established an early 5-2 lead. Then Keith figuratively speaking pulled up his socks and got on a bit of a roll to lead 7-5. Luckily Julian’s dad turned up needing to swap car keys and after a long discussion, Keith’s socks had fallen down again and the first game was Julian’s. Julian then launched into a big second game lead. The fight-back came again and this time Julian’s dad was nowhere. The game was lost. Julian put up little resistance from that point on. Julian’s dad will be taken to all future matches and rolled out when required.
Herman has cut out the weekend friendlies which he was convinced meant he was overplaying. He is now playing just once a week in team matches. The fear of being extended beyond three games is obvious and he was as ruthless as ever in despatching Terry.
2-1 to Poultwood.
Jake took on Keith P in what both men knew would be a crucial tie for the fixture as a whole. Keith’s accurate floating style against Jake in hit it bloody hard mode. Luckily for Jake everything went up about an inch above the tin and was practically un-returnable. 3-0 to brute force over style. Trouble is Jake may have used up all his winners for the season.
The reporter didn’t see the Farmer versus the Scot. I hope it wasn’t a classic. The facts as we know them. Giles won. It took about 40 minutes. Nobody got hurt.
So, the fixture decided, Paul versus Ian for the points. Julian marked and probably wishes he hadn’t. Paul was determined and used what he saw as injustice to motivate himself. He got angry at the marker, the ball, himself, his racket and the court. Ian joined in with the chat, although it seemed mostly directed at himself. It was a battle to 2-2. Ian looked to be playing more within himself, but Paul was reminding his team mates why we should always play him at No1. So the final game and the winner would earn 1 extra point for their team. Ian took it 9-7 in a game that lacked the controversy of the previous four but contained just as good squash.
So 1-1 for the season which seems about right and two enjoyable fixtures.
