Report: | 2nd in the table Biggin Hill travelled over to the what was known as the old Bromley Town squash club to take on 4 th placed Cannons I.
With just one loss out of their previous four matches and just two points off the lead, this could be great opportunity for Hill to surge ahead. However, Cannons were of the same thinking and needed to better their two losses from their last five outings.
The team for Hill however was missing undefeated players Mark Lennox (2), & John Lane (3) through last minute injuries. Despite the exemplary effort to get a strong side out, Hill arrived with just four players including Ray Bushell, and Simon Wanford having to play above their usual stations.
2 nd String - (BH) Andy Wilde v (Can) Richard Kimpton
Super fit Wilde with his 50+ years experience took charge of the match by crushing a comparable weakling (Kimpton) 9/7, 9/5 in the opening two games. Kimpton looking dazed and confused, used his guile and on occasion misguided determination to get back into the match by winning the third 9/7. Wilde, cunning as ever with a number low hard drives kept Kimpton on the ropes but it was not to be as Kimpton fought back from 2-1 down to steal the match 3-2. It has to be said that Kimpton needs to make more of a play for the ball than crying to the referee for far fetched lets - just an observation Rich, no hard feelings..
3 rd String (BH) Ray Bushell v (Can) Dave Leach
Leach opened the match by winning the opening games 9/5, 9/5 in a fairly even fought contest. However Bushell dug in to win the third 9/6 and seemed to have that winning look in his eye when Leach won the opening six points in the 4 th making it just too much of a mountain to climb. Leach eventually won the last 9/3 to give the hosts a very nice minimum 3/2 win (including the w/o).
4 th String (BH) Simon Wanford v (Can) Peter Willmor
Wanford had a tall order to steal match points from a very experienced club player Willmor. The first game zipped by 9/2 to Willmor closely followed by the 2 nd a little closer 9/6. Wanford turned the 3 rd in his favour taking the opening 6 points by not making the mistakes and forcing Willmor into a frenzy of unforced errors. Unfortunately for Wanford the tables soon turned as Willmor tucked the 3 rd away 9/6.
1 st string - (BH) Gordon McMannus v (Can) Sam Stabler
McMannus looked up for the game beforehand but so did Stabler. It's fair to say some of the squash was fantastic with some excellent retrieving and flying nicks but it soon became very one sided. McMannus went for a great number of winners off the serve which simply didn't pay off - many landing in the tin, some not even making the front wall. Whilst this might seem harsh, we all know McMannus is capable some awesome squash - sadly this wasn't to be his night. It has to be said, a good win under the belt for Stabler.
Cannons won the match 5-0, and collected the full 20 points whilst Biggin Hill only picked up a measly 3.
Good job Biggin Hill have that game in hand!
