Report: | Village People stick to their vow.
After the unfortunate brouhaha at the end of the winter season, and rumours on the grapevine of revenge to be sought in the most obvious way possible, PL1 entertained Cascades last night. First the match though.
The return of London jnr from uni gave a new look to the top of the PL1 order, as he took on Stuart Lamprell on the glue wall court round the back of the building.
Odd kind of game scorewise. Steve went to 5-0 in one hand before Stuart got going in fine style to take the next 9 points and the 1st game. At this point two months ring rust had obviously been blown out of the system and Steve engaged the afterburners to blow Stu off the court for the sake of one more point.
Meanwhile back in the land of civilisation, Adam was putting his football injury to the test against Mike Stimpson. Didn't see any of this (as usual), but Adam obviously played well in his first match for a while to record a 3-0 win and put PL1 two matches to the good.
Back in the sticks, it was the turn of London snr to take on Ash Tomlin.
Ash (as is his wont) came out of the blocks as though he had a bar to hammer (but more of that later). Yours truly spent the first two games wondering what day of the week it was (and wishing it wasn't Tuesday). Ash picked everything out of the air, generated terrific pace and covered every shot. Looked odds on a 3-0. Finally, having absorbed no.1 sons' coaching tips, the old man got going and a little more accuracy was found. Though the rest of the match was a battle (particularly the 5th where Ash really upped the pace), the author managed to maintain enough control to squeeze in 3-2. At least Sicknote had the decency to look injured again afterwards.
On the other court meanwhile Andy Davies was making BBGB's night. After comfortably putting two games on the board Bob's pre-season training paid off as he recorded his first game in the Priory for quite a long while. Normal service was resumed after this though with Andy keeping up his early season form to record another good win.
Once again, the rearguard action was performed by Simon Grey as he took on Tony Lake to round the match off.
Simon has obviously benefitted from his Sunday morning training sessions and looks to be getting into his stride. The 1st game was well controlled, but Steptoe was in no mood to lie back and took a big lead in the 2nd looking odds on to level the scores. His normally reliable forehand drops seemed to be misfiring a bit on this occasion though, and Simon clawed his way back before making a bit of a nonsense of the call for "one" at 8-8. So, 2-0 up and the traffic continued to flow in the same direction in the 3rd for Simon to wrap up another good night for PL1 (at least up to this point).
So, now it was time for the real entertainment. Let it be noted well here that what follows, does so with the notable (and surprising) exception of BBGB who to his credit appeared to want to rise above such things, and looked pretty ticked off at proceedings. In fact he looked so subdued that apart from a few references in the changing room to his poor length, he was a pale shadow of his normal entertaining self.
Still, this wasn't about to stop the caning of the bar that followed, as the rest of them filled their boots (quite literally judging by the doubling of the normal bar bill). I hope they had a team driver as I wouldn't have wanted to be going in the opposite direction as they made their way home.
All that remains is to see if PL can rise above such things (unlikely), as the small flaw in their plan is that we still have to go down there, and the team bus is being prepared as I write! Mr Kimber will be waiting in the wings. |
