Report: | Have to say, this is always the venue I enjoy visiting most (even if i'm not playing) With two matches happening at the same time,a great atmosphere and good crowds is assured.
Two strong teams out tonight with PL1 welcoming Steve back and Fordy heading up the Hill Billies for the first time this season.
First up,
Rent Boy v Steve
With Steve looking fit and focused and RB looking the dead opposite this was a contradiction in styles if ever there was one.
Steve started stronger going into a 5-2 lead while RB risked low percentage winners.
Order was restored when RB senior demanded junior looked after his loaned rackets or else. A hang dog look appeared across RB's face like a puppy that had just received it's first *ollocking for running off without permission.
Good line and length became the new order of the day which saw RB run out the first 9-6.
The second and third followed a similar vein with both players working very hard to impose themselves with Steve in particular making some outstanding 'gets'
With things getting tight both players were asking questions of Hand Jive in the refs seat but he just jutted his chin out and carried on making the correct calls.
RB finally ran out a 3-0 winner but in fairness the game was a lot tighter than the scoreline suggested.
A Good Few Beers v Simon
I have thought long and hard about some positives I could find in this one but eventually gave up !
Both players struggled to find line, length, width or a tight drop but all these qualaties left town long before these two went on court.
AGFB finally hacked his way to a 3-0 win in a good humoured match-ahh there's a positive!
Mighty Mac v Chris
With the lighting a little like court 3 at the Hill and coloured courts, MM was not filling me with much confidence when this one kicked off.
The first saw Chris moving the ball around well and finishing with some fine winners, MM waved his racket around with a forlourn hope of making contact with the ball occasionally,9-1 to Chris.
At 4-1 down in the next MM started to get a vague idea where the front wall was and started to motor eventually taking the second 9-6.
MM in full flow by the third with Chris going in the opposite direction. A persistant back injury had returned and a no show for the fourth meant a 3-1 win for Mighty Mac.
James v Fordy
This in theory could have been a good one but with Fordy looking lean and mean, James in the other corner did not.
Amusing exchange between the pair before the Start. Fordy assesing James ample waistline asked were the six pack had gone,James reply was he had developed it into a twelve pack !
After some hard rallies in the first, this one was never in doubt.Fordy moving the ball around well finishing with some clinical winners. 3-0 to Fordy.
Smooth Operator v Hand Jive
Game of the night this one.
Both players started steadily with HJ squeezing out the last few points in the first to go 1-0 up.
SO came out in the second slowing things right down and in a way playing HJ at his own game.
A very tight game with both players working very hard in warm conditions.Could have gone either way but SO clinched it 10-8.
The third was controlled by SO using the angles and making HJ cover a lot of court.S/O takes it 9-4 and H/J looking tired.
The fourth agin saw SO in control going into a 7-1 and 8-2 lead but the legend, robot, cyborg whatever you want to call him that is Hand Jive refused to roll over and scrapped tooth and nail to find a way back in, nearly pulling it off but at 8-7 SO finally closed out the match after HJ clipped the tin going for his trade mark drop.
A fine match to watch.
So a big win for the Hill Billies and a profitable night for Fordy after AGFB's booked himself in for about two thousand coaching sessions (don't think that will be enough mate !) |
