Report: | Well, since El Cap seems to be a bit tardy, I'd better step into the breech.
PL1 visited Plaistow Lane in a torrential downpour for what proved to be something of a turning point in their recent run of dire results.
First up El Cap v Davies.
Ian went off out of the blocks like a train in this one (or was it just Andy visiting the tin so often). It was over in a flash anyway. Andy managed to steady the boat in the 2nd after going well down early on, but it seems as though this was a short lived reprieve as El Cap re-established his authority to gain revenge for his first half loss.
Next door, #3 (or in this case #2) v London jnr.
Sam appeared to realise pretty early on that if he was going to get anything out of this one he was going to be working long and hard for it. Although the game was pretty competitive you always got the impression that there was only one of them who believed they were going to win it - and did. Steve's return to match fitness took another step here with a pretty assured 3-0 victory.
Next up, Pyne v London snr.
Since the Student was skulking around injured, Adam had been hauled over from Windsor again to fill in. Having spent a few futile minutes trying to convince the author of his dire fitness levels and general lack of court time (to no avail as the author has heard it all before on countless occasions), we got under way. In a total photocopy of the London jnr result (scorewise), PL1 were into a lead with the author rounding off a fairly comfortable victory. This despite Student's wandering attention whilst marking. Something about his girlfriend giving him a hard time about nicking her turquoise scarf and his Mum's yellow jumper for the evening.
Meanwhile a marathon next door - FC v Grey.
Rich nearly ended up wringing El Cap's neck over this one. The first game was long and close, after which Rich got into his stride. Close again in the 3rd, getting to match ball at 9-8 to Rich. Cue El Cap classic. Simon hits the ball back at himself in the most obvious stroke situation the entire gallery (-1) had ever seen. El Cap announces "let - I never give a stroke on match ball" with a sheepish expression on his face. Simon duly sneaks the game and then proceeds to reel off the next one too. El Cap reported that he was 'ca*cking himself' in the gallery as the prospect of a BCC defeat loomed before him. Still, Rich was having none of it and stepped on the gas to run out easily in the 5th.
So, all square and King Lewy v JEJ to decide it.
James having finished a hard 3-2 in Surrey Cup earlier in the evening, and still carrying some of last week's reported 12 pack around, looked a bit weary in this one. Lewy was doing a fair impression of a blue-arsed fly, covering amazing amounts of the court, usually in response to JEJ's deception. This and some classy overhead nicks saw Lewy claw his way back to sneak the 3rd having gone 2-0 down. JEJ's weariness became a bit more pronounced, but he still had enough left in the tank to take the 4th and record a win for PL1.
So, a good night for a change for PL1, and the BCC boys didn't seem too traumatised at the result. Onwards and upwards maybe? |
