Report: | This week's match was the opportunity to see whether PL1 could rise above the bar clobbering antics that Cascades had indulged in last time out. The answer was - yes of course we did. Hopefully revenge is now out of the way and we can all get back to what passes for normal.
First up Hulbert v Grey.
After his match winning performance last week, Simon appeared slightly jaded against an opponent determined to bury every ball through the front wall. After going two behind, Simon stepped the pace up and won the 3rd well. The 4th was a very tight game with Craig finding the answer to pretty much everything Simon could throw at him. Bit of a bizarre finish as Simon went to walk off court at 9-9 only to be told "no you haven't won the game". He reappeared for the one point needed to round off a win for Craig.
Next door, Stimpson v Davies.
Andy managed to steer the ship back onto course after last week's battle royal with Sly, and despite being well and truly drilled in the leg by a full-blooded Stimpson drive, controlled the game just well enough in each game to see him through to a good 3-1 victory. This was a tight match throughout, and levelled the match scores.
Second on Sicknote v London snr (looking like a Mike Tyson victim after a wasp sting on the cheekbone)!
This (as is usually the case) was a bit of a gut-buster. The majority of the 1st was consigned to history as the author worked up to speed. As the rust was blown away at the end of the game Sicknote nominated his opponent Mr Fantastic as yet another dead looking ball was scraped up. The match progressed into a very tight 2nd, and it became apparent that Mr Fantastic was being outdone by Sicknote's impression of the Duracell Bunny. Does that man NEVER stop running!? Having sneaked the 2nd, MF got well up in a hard fought 3rd only to become involved in truly horrendous rally at 8-3, which saw DB sitting on the floor at the back having finally played a winning boast after about 2000 shots, while MF leant on his racket gasping for air. Thankfully, MF's fitness levels were enough to continue on and take the 4th to wrap up a 3-1 win.
Next door, Steptoe v Whirlwind.
Didn't see any of this, but WW is obviously poaching the author's 1st game tactics judging by the 9-0 drubbing he took. After this he got himself back in to take the 2nd before once again being pegged back as Steptoe went 2-1 up after a tight 3rd. WW subsequently did enough to keep his nose in front and run out a 3-2 winner. Once again looking much happier with life these days.
The match was rounded off with Soliman v JEJ.
Mo looked about as keen as normal for this match. Having laid himself out on the floor of the gallery to catch some sleep while he waited to go on (and presumably boost whatever arcane motivational methods he employs), the match couldn't finish soon enough for him. Not bothering to employ the services of a marker, the pair of them rushed through a very short match. Mo was so keen to get away that one game flowed into another with no breaks. JEJ wrapped up an efficient 3-0.
So to the bar. Due to the late start (good tactic), the match finished pretty late. Both the route march needed to reach the bar and the late finish, meant that not much drinking time remained. The usual sequence of events followed: excuses all round about empty wallets, followed by a happy text from AGFB on the way home to reveal the surprising news that BH had won again. Well fancy that. |
