Report: | The Whirlwind returns.
As the dust starts to settle after the pre-season political infighting at Langley Towers, a speck of light appears at the end of the tunnel. The Whirlwind (alias Steve Pratt), has reappeared after a long absence.
PL1 entertained a newly strengthened Bromley C.C in this season opener. With the recruitment of Stabler and Kimpton, BCC are looking a strong outfit to challenge The Hill when at full strength. Luckily for PL1, they weren't quite at full strength with Dutch and The Student missing.
First up: Davies v McMeckan.
The first of PL's own new recruits was looking very fired up to play El Cap. It started off looking like it was going to be a tough one, but after a few points it became apparent that El Cap was being hampered by a recently sustained footie injury. Andy pushed on through, showing no mercy to record a comfortable 3-0 win.
Next door: Whirlwind v JT.
After spending most of the winter season looking thoroughly p*ssed off, and then getting injured, it was a welcome bonus to find out two days before the season started that the Whirlwind is back in harness and raring to go. In truth this was an amazing result for WW, having not picked up a racket in months (and having to borrow one for the evening due to losing his own). The 1st and 2nd were over in short order with JT capitalising on WW's ring rust. After that the 3rd and 4th were pegged back by WW to record some valuable points before unsurprisingly running out of steam in the 5th, to allow JT to record a 3-2 win. So honours even.
Next on: London snr v Stabler.
Keen to avenge defeat in the second half of the winter, the author took to the court against BCC new boy Stabler. This was a much better match than the past few in that (at least for the first 3 games), both players seemed to be playing fairly well at the same time, and it wasn't entirely decided by the other's mistakes. With honours even at 1-1 it always felt as though the 3rd would be the crucial one, and so it turned out. Sam started to tin a few from about 3/4 of the way through the 3rd, and this continued through the 4th with the autor keeping his head down to record a 3-1 win.
Next door: Robbins v Ryall.
Didn't see any of this one. Looking at the scores and the none-too-bothered look on Lewie's face afterwards, this one went pretty much as expected, with Jim squeezing through the 3rd to record a 3-0 win in his second match of the day.
So, pressure off both remaining new boys: Grey v Kimpton.
Only saw the start and end of this one. This was a typical first match of the season really. Both players had their chances to win games, but Simon let his get away from him in both the 1st and 3rd which were very tight. Rich won the points when it mattered to win 3-0.
A good start for PL1 against one of the pre-season favourites, but it's early days yet, and it remains to be seen whether we can keep turning out the same team strength with a biggish injury list even before the campaign got underway. |
