Report

Report:After countless conversations between myself and Hand Jive over two days regarding numbers available for the PL1 team, it was finally confirmed only three players would be making the trip to the Hill for the last Hurrah.
That coupled with the walls on both courts being soaking wet from the start due to wet & warm weather meant that this encounter was going to be a bit of a damp squib (literaly). Not so,read on.
First up:

A Good Few Beers v Simon
These two guys kicked off in pond three with AGFB starting strongly and closing out the first 9-3 in quick order. Simon however started to use the conditions to his advantage with boasts which AGFB literally had no idea where they would go.The only thing for certain was they wouldn't go where they should !
At 7-7 Simon decided to play a straight shot for a change and promptly tinned it which allowed AGFB the chance to close out a tight second 9-7.
The third was pretty much a repeat of the second with AGFB supporting a bemused expression the whole time before closing the match out 9-7.

Beverley Hills Rent Boy v Steve
Well this one started out fast and furious with both players obviously well fed on raw meat before the off.
Steve played the first 6 points pretty much error free forcing BHRB into mistakes by playing accurate line and length with great pace.
However at 6-1 up Steve made an error to let BHRB back in and he gradually started to nibble into Steve's lead.Steve at this point started vent his frustration as his grip on the game started to slip. BHRB virtually went straight through and won the first 9-6. Strangely BHRB seemed as *issed off with things as much as Steve was when both players went off court.
The start of the second and BHRB surged into a 5-2 lead which started to show ominous signs of things slipping away from Steve. However,Steve was not about to roll over and let BHRB take control of things and if anything stepped up the pace taking the ball as early as possible and when the opportunity arose firing in sharp drops to both corners.
At 5-5 two errors from BHRB seemed to press his self destruct button with him not even bothering to play the last point.
Into the third and Steve came out firing, keeping his concentration levels up while BHRB did the opposite.9-2 in quick time to Steve and the writing was on the wall.
The fourth was a non event with Steve keeping his work rate very high and BHRB looking like he wanted to be somewhere else.
So a 3-1 win for Steve which will raise a few eyebrows and maybe the odd question of what was up with BHRB. The simple fact is, Steve played a very strong match, getting everything back and his shot selection was spot on pretty much all night.Steve will be a happy soul today and rightly so.

Smooth Operator v Hand Jive
By the time these two went on you would be forgiven to think things would just become a bit of a joke as the walls were now streaming. SO at least seemed to think there was a chance of brushing up on his breast stroke in pool 4 as he went on court in his Bermudas.
With conditions as they were, both players seemed to adopt the right attitude and just got on with it. The result was a very high quality game with both lads playing some excellent squash.
SO seemed to adapt quickest and got off to a good start but as is quite often the case, Hand Jive gradually reeled SO in and nicked the first 9-7. The second again saw SO controlling a lot of rallies and HJ working very hard to keep in it.This time SO got the verdict and reversed the first game scoreline.
The third game was crucial with many long hard rallies. HJ at this point started to jump up the side of the walls a bit like a Gnu that had fallen in a river of crocs and was trying to get out. A query from DC as to what he was playing at was answered by HJ 'I'm trying to find a dry bit of wall above the water plain to dry my hands !!' Seemed logical to me so they carried on.
SO finally took the third with a series of fine winners.
The fourth saw SO play his best squash hitting nicks and wrong footing flicks from all points and finally HJ succumbed 9-2.
Without doubt the game of the night and both players should take a lot of credit for their performances in the worst conditions I have seen.

So That's it, another season done & dusted.
A perfect season from a Hill Billy perspective but not as easy as the table may suggest.
Several teams I'm sure will be reflecting on some very close results which could so easily gone the other way.
Think I will put a post on the Forum about 'The game of the season'. From speaking to several players across the teams, there really were some very high quality matches this season which are worth reflecting on.Nothing like a bit of post season banter to keep things ticking over in the break.
