Report

Report:This match was preceded (as is the team captains' lot in life) by the 6.30pm text with WW pulling out due to his dodgy thumb being aggravated by a game of tennis. So a succession of fruitless calls to attempt to locate a substitute ensued, followed by a quick call to relay the news to the opposition. Then as 7.15pm arrived the call comes in that the hitherto unavailable (for the 2nd team) Big Trev had phoned in wondering if he might get a game! It was felt that this level of mucking the opposition about and Rob Lewis' dodgy back precluded saying yes, so PL1 arrived with their customary 4 man summer team (for the 1st time this year).

First on were Falla v Davies.
Andy overcame his altitude sickness to battle long and hard against the recovering Steveo in this one. Due to being on next door I didn't see any of this, but Andy got himself to 2-1 and 7-4 up no doubt with his usual never-say-die brand of 100% effort. Sadly for PL it wasn't to be as Steve clawed his way back in using his extensive match experience. So, Bexley two up, and all to play for.

Next door meanwhile - Sumner v London snr.
This was a tough one, not made any easier (as London jnr was to find out later) by the Harlem Globetrotters ball produced from Rob Lewis' stash of Del Boy specials. This thing fizzed around the court like a bullet the second it was hit hard. Armed with his new Dangerman inspired racket, and a full set of Ben Ford coaching sessions, Scott set about proving to the author that this was a win to be earned. And so it proved. Scott dispatched winners to and from all areas of the court to take a big lead in the 1st. Undaunted (well maybe a bit daunted), the author clawed back points towards the end of the game, and managed a Houdini act to sneak it. Thereafter, Scott appeared to get a little bit tired, and yours truly got into his (never entirely comfortable) stride to take the next two games for a tight 3-0 win.

Next up Badger v JEJ.
Fresh from escaping a lifetime ban for his despicable tennis antics, and still fuming over missing the RAC game after showing exemplary dedication to the cause at Coulsdon last week in Surrey Cup (DC take note), Slack took on a fresh JEJ. Didn't see too much of this one (heard a fair bit though), but it seems to have been a typical JEJ performance. Jimbo probably had his mind on his speed camera woes, but used his usual brand of relaxed stuff and unreadable (by Slack and most of the rest of us anyway) deception shots to ease his way to a 3-0 win.

So to the last and deciding match - Brind v London jnr.
This was the match of the night though Steve would probably beg to differ. Steph looked pretty well up for this one, and for significant chunks of the match dominated many rallies. However, dominating and winning aren't the same thing, and whilst Steve was sent repeatedly to every corner by Steph's fearsome driving (aided by the aforesaid HG ball) pretty much everything came back, wih athleticism not being in short supply. Steve eventually rounded off an entertaining match with a 3-0 victory.

So to the bar which was busier than I can remember seeing Bexley in quite a while. Another good win for the PL team as we battle to try for the runners up spot, and the usual gloating text from AGFB to finish the evening off.
