Report:Woe! Woe! And thrice woe!

Three last-minute let-downs in one day meant that Knole fielded a far from full-strength team to face the ever dangerous Bexley 2s.

Hung over captain John, who had been looking forward to a bit of R&R following three damp days would have been happy with a best of one match against hip-along Peter. Unfortunately, under the strict Priory rules, the first close game (1-0 KP) had to be followed by several more (3-1 Bx). Peter’s superior knowledge of the physical contact and regulatory side of squash allowed him to overhaul JJ – and Peter still had time and enough energy to give the marker a brief lesson in the finer points of ‘T’ ownership after the match. He would have done it during the match, but was worried that his opponent’s concentration might suffer! (What concentration? - Ed)

Playing meant that JJ missed the game on the other court – Mark Tinning v Jack Breen Jnr III. It must have been a humdinger, especially as Mark seems to have out-stamina’d his Junior opponent. Mark looks a lot older, but appearances can be deceptive. He only needs one good arm and a leg to give some good players a fright when his cut and overheads are on song.

Chris S-B took on the artful O’Reilly. Chris was anxious to get away early and so was frustrated when he occasionally won a point or two. Against the odds, he managed to haul Tony back in the second game from 1-8 back to 7-8 – only to be denied by a firm ‘stroke’ call from Prof. P. Lewis. Hawkeye’s view suggested that Chris might have been a tad hard done by. But to his credit, Chris took it like a man (especially as it enabled him to fast track his early departure).

Tom never really got into his stride against Matt and there was not a repeat of his previous week’s heroics in the third as Matt clinically closed it out 9-0.

With nothing to play for but pride, a still rusty post injury Chris Sayer got close to Dave Thompson. Some good retrieving could not make up for a lack of match practice, though. And Dave was glad to see a slightly flattering 3-0 scoreline with Chris fading at the end.

Showers out of order, so down to the neighbouring Town Club for a wash. Then a very healthy OJ&Lemon bar bill followed by enough food to feed the five thousand. Little consolation for a let-down Knole skipper who has now seen his relegation certainties go from topping the table to bottoming in two weeks. That must be a record. It’s certainly a Knole Park first.
