Report: | Beckenham just too strong for the struggling Parkers. But maybe not strong enough to challenge for promotion.
With Cath (mystery sickness) and Geoff (back on the sauce) unable to write, JJ has reluctantly been forced to write about the away game.
With Chris, unaccustomed to going on first, looking wide awake and clinical, Lee was quickly and tidily overcome, allowing spectators to concentrate on the battle of the grumpy old men next door.
Gary looked all at sea in the first, then completely turned the tables in the second with some good anticipation and finely judged boasts. The argy-bargy didn't start until the middle of the third, when Gary accidentally clipped Ian (who was crowding) on the temple. This seemed to spur a red-faced Ian into life and he rattled off the third. A close call against Gary (no let - lack of effort) riled the Knole veteran and he ran out of tricks. A misjudged shout of 'taxi' after a good wrong-footing shot, was perhaps premature as Ian managed to scramble to the ball. To his credit, Gary did offer a let (declined) and it was his last hurrah.
John and Jerry were clinically despatched by Matt and Geoff, with both the Knole players looking jaded from summer excesses. Geoff, in particular, on the other hand, was leaping around well thanks to his strict new regime of only tippling after a match - never before.
Old mates Cath and Mark played the very dead final rubber, with Mark showing a few more of his defter touches than in recent matches and about the same number of tins as usual. In the end Cath overcame her physical frailties sufficiently to confine Mark to the one team point. Entertaining play from both was enjoyed by all - even Mark (?)
Cath, however, was unable to keep down more than half of her curry and nan bread afterwards - a point that will not have escaped the gossip mongers.
And the real Oliver Pollard was on hand to deny rumours that he had ever heard of, let alone seen or visited the Priory Forum (although, being deaf, blind and lame, he couldn't have - could he?). Titters amongst the Beckenham crew suggested that they know the true identity of the imposternator.
[Report on Chris Morgan's absence - to watch water tennis at Wimbledon (honestly!) - will appear here later]
