Report

Report:An eventful night at Fitness first. With Freds arriving late at 8.10 and the food booked for 10.15 it looked like we were going to have to eat on court!

Syd and Ross were on first with Syd cruising to a 1-0 lead much to the dismay of the complaining Ross. Syd frustrating Ross with his tactical awareness (he hit the ball above the red line and away from his opponent.) Gradually Ross, with youth on his side, managed to out pace Syd to take the first match 3-1.

Paul and Andy were having a marathon on the other court. Something Paul really didn’t need having just got back from his honeymoon and being called up at the last minute. Paul lost the first having had about 7 game points but made up in the second by grinding out a 9-1 victory. Paul was unable to keep up the blistering pace required to beat his man and went down 3-1.

Next on Dave and Terry at 1. Terry looked sharp and powered his way to a 1-0 lead. Dave replied swiftly in the second taking the game 9-2. Terry’s retrieving was at its best but was just not enough, despite a change of marker, Dave took the match 3-1.

Carlos v Matt looked to be all one-way traffic. Carlos took the first with a dazzling array of drop shots and surged to an 8-1 lead in the second. Matt found his legs to pull back to 8-8. Despite not having won any of the last seven points Carlos called one. Latching onto a loose Carlos return, Matt played a drop shot to the front forehand. Carlos struggled to get to the shot and called for a let claiming that Matt was in the way. No let was given, Carlos appealed the decision in his usual exemplary manner and received a conduct warning for verbal abuse of the marker. Unfortunately this failed to calm the situation and only fuelled his rage leading to further verbal abuse. Carlos decided on another tactic, racing up to the marker to threaten and abuse him. (If he had run that fast for the last point he may have got a stroke.) Unfortunately his lack of verbal dexterity failed to change the marker’s decision and he returned to the court alone not realising he had been disqualified and that his opponent had refused to play on. In his loneliness and frustration he invited the marker to join him on court. Having already spent a fortune at the dentist following a stag party accident (or two), the marker politely declined the generous invitation leaving Carlos to once again ooze his charm to the on looking crowd who thought that they had stumbled onto a scene from crime fighters U.K. I am told that Carlos is available for children’s parties and can be booked via his agent, and long suffering manager, Syd.

Peter and Alan played out the dead rubber. Alan being too fit for Peter who spent most of the night complaining that the ball didn’t bounce enough. (A sad consequence of a racketball overdose).

Overall an entertaining night.
