Report: | Please Don't die of shock at BLTSC 1 putting in it's first match report. Dulwich arrived with a team called Ed, strings 2 & 5 several hours before 1,3 & 4. So contrary to the usual we let 2 & 5 go on first.
Mark and Ed at 5
I didn't see this match ( marking the number 2s - not because of a lack of interest ). Ed won in 3 straight but Mark at least redeemed some respectability by losing 10/8 in the 3rd. He did however, bring along a supporter, who helped with the food, bar and washing up afterwards. And therefore despite losing Mark is welcome to come again - in a non-playing capacity and as long as he brings along the same support. Match 1-0 to Dulwich
Ian "the Hammer" v Ed ( aka Jake ) at 2
A good match, well marked ( see above ). Jake has some excellent winning shots but so does Ian. Ian played consistently and that probably made the difference, close rallies, closes games but Ian winning the important points towards the end of each game. 3-0 Ian, match 1-1.
Ron ( Braveheart ) v Ed ( aka Jack ) at 4.
Ron - I have more leg braces than your local NHS Trust - played a brilliant game, nick winners everywhere, drives stuck to the walls, drops barely over the tin and unplayable lobs into back corners. Or so he told me. Personally I think Jack made too many unforced errors and made Ron look good. 3-0 to Ron and match 2-1 in favour of Bromley.
Porky v Ed ( really ) at 3.
A hard first game with the score never more than a point apart. Keith got to 8, game ball first but Ed fought back to have his own at 9 but couldn't convert it. Keith had another at 9 however Ed finally won the game. But it took a lot out of him and despite sound advice from Matt ( sorry Ed ) to play more short Keith proved the fitter and ran out the next three games fairly straightforwardly. Tie 3-1 Bromley, match 3-1 Bromley.
Colin (haven't played for 2 weeks) v Ed ( or Matt ) at first string.
Colin sees his girlfriend once every 3 months ( she works abroad ) and so having just returned from holiday was "tired" even before going on court. However Colin's "tired" is everyone else's bloody fit and quick. Matt hadn't got his shots going and Colin won the first 9-3. However, he did look tired in the second and Matt was fully warmed up now, hitting crisp balls into good positions, retrieving well and easily won the second 9-0. Colin came out more determined to play through his tiredness in the 3rd, Matt hit some good winners but also started to make unforced errors - unforced by winners constantly being returned; tight, fast driving, and unbelievably for Colin, drop shots and boasts that actually looked like drop shots and boasts. Colin took the 3rd 9-2. Similar story for game 4 - a few errors by Matt, several good short shots from Colin, interspersed with high quality play from both players, Colin taking it 9-5.
So overall score 4-1 in favour of Brommley, re-affirming their best season for several years. But well fought by Dulwich in a friendly match.
