Report: | With the Summer Division 4 shield (won by them in 2003?) still firmly superglued to their (dry) bar mirror, FF are obviously desperate not to find themselves having to defend it! And not for the first time were KP caught napping; expecting to see a weak Fitness (George working; Carlos sulking), they were dismayed to see a full-strength FF sauntering down the path.
First up, Big Terry was raring to get at Big Tom – and with a favourable marker this time (I knew you came for a reason , Big Syd) – was only briefly troubled. Tom was relatively sharp for a couple of games, before his three weeks off began to take effect. With a bit of luck he might have sneaked it; but 1-1 for the season in head-to-heads for these two is probably a fair outcome.
On the other court, the unexpected Carlos was making a return from last week’s one match ban and previous exile. He had brought most of his unsportsmanlike behaviour with him, against all advice, and this may have accounted for his lacklustre beginning and middle. Carlos deep down is no slouch, though and his years of experience paid off, as Jerry’s accuracy and speed waned. Rousing himself from a deep sulk, Carlos reeled off the last two games easily – 2-0 to Fitness and the worst of all possible holes for the Knoles.
Knole had at least one secret weapon to play. Andy. With at least one win under his ample belt this season, Andy was keen to let the world know – very loudly – that he was not playing at his best. OK,WE HEARD YOU, ANDY!! Mark, unused to the air being bluer on his opponent’s side of the court, took advantage of this seasonal loss of form and put Andy away in 3. KP’s relegation avoidance hopes still hanging – by a thread.
Chris Sayer was the banker for Fitness first this week. Already worn down by his girlfriend’s cooking, previous sports injuries, and a nasty touch of RSI from work, Chris had decided to follow Fred’s example of Stag do injuries. On an away week to Poland he managed to wrap a go-kart around a pole and his ribs. Luckily perhaps, the bruising/cracking effects were cushioned by large helpings of whatever the Poles dish up for grub, most of which remains to be absorbed or recycled by Chris. The result was a humdiinger of a match. George may have expected the usual crash, bash and run, slide game from Chris. Instead, Chris chose to dink and slowball , copying George’s style as much as possible. George was so confused that he gave the first and third games away from 7-3, 7-2 leads. An evenly matched fourth was settled after Chris called one. George raced to an 8-4 lead in the fifth, only to see a dead Chris claw back to 8-8. An incredible rally to finish, with Chris prostrate on his posterior. Nothing left in the tank, but more miles covered than expected.
Chris Morgan took on Alan in the dead rubber and by the third, when Chris pulled up lame, it was clear than Alan was the sharper.
Syd – what a gentleman – having dropped himself (no wins this season) - offered to pay for his own drinks. Perhaps he was trying to assuage his guilt for eating all the lamb chops and starving KP’s Chris Morgan last time out. It didn’t work. JJ is still puzzled by Syd’s reaction when his money was refused. ‘That’s taking the piss’ referred either to the drinking, the offer to pay, the refusal of the offer, or the resultant non-payment. We are unsure, but it was well done, whichever.
Div. 2 relegation still down to the wire – KP and one other, but on this form, it could be Freds. We will enjoy either of their company in 3 next season, but Freds just have the edge on the food and drink. And their supporters are heavier (marginally).
