Report: | Well, with the enthusiasm creeping slowly back I think a little report is in order.
PL1 played host to Tunbridge Wells last night at Langley Towers. The TW team turned up looking pretty strong despite no Mr Tapsfield. PL were looking likely to have another hard night. But not to be.
First on were Davies v Lawton.
Andy took a little while to get into his stride in this one. A scrappy first game saw John capitalising on Andy's somewhat loose unconsidered game. After some discussion with the PL backroom staff however, Andy emerged more focused and apart from a few mini walkabouts proceeded to wrap up a good win to get PL off to a winning start - 3-1.
Next door, a revitalised Pratt v Ward.
WW started to look a little bit like the player of a couple of seasons ago last week, and the improvement continued last night. The "all over the place" stuff seems to have been reduced and despite clearly lacking enough match practice, and being ****** (euphemism deleted to protect family audience) in the 3rd, a second wind kicked in to ensure that WW put in a convincing perfomance and eked out a thoroughly well deserved 3-2 win against an impressive looking opponent.
Next up JEJ v Richards.
JEJ clearly had the parlous state of his driving licence on his mind for the first part of this match, having been nicked again on the way to the match. Tim played some beautifully controlled stuff to take the first two games fairly comfortably. At last JEJ settled into it though, hauling himself back into the match and taking the next three hard fought games, the match finishing on a rather unfortunate stroke against Tim. So 3-2 to JEJ.
Next door, London snr v Head.
Clearly benefitting from a nice relaxing weekend (see elsewhere), the author was in pretty good order for this one. A good match to play in. Plenty of hard rallies but yours truly just did enough to put the words of the chief (family) coach into practice again, and ran out a 3-0 winner. Jolyon (?) became the latest nonplussed member of the "why don't PL do something about the back wall seams on court 2" club as several balls pinged out at right angles after a straight drive.
And so to the graveyard slot. Grey v Johnson.
Simon seems to have taken this slot over from the author now (thanks for that). As is so often the case, it's either all on you or it appears no-one gives a damn. Steve, having hung around a long time for this one got into gear very early on, and Simon presented him with a fair number of free points as he produced his usual slow start. Things didn't get much better in the 2nd, but as the post-shower crowd slowly refilled the gallery, Simon started to get it back together, winning a tight 3rd. Sadly for PL it wasn't to be though, and Steve came through strongly to take the 4th and salvage some points for TW.
So a good night for PL. After last week's drubbing a few more points on the board against a pretty strong TW.
