Report: | Having been delayed until Wednesday due to BCCs fixture rotation policy, the match against PL1 left almost everyone wishing they were otherwise engaged (mostly to watch the Steve McLaren sacking party). Players arrived and departed at odd hours, sometimes on the way to other matches (Ted) sometimes on the way back after other matches (JEJ), early arrivals (Simon the day before!) and late ones (Rich - much to WW's disgust - about time you had to go on last matey). Eventually things got underway.
First up Lindsay v London snr.
This was a bit of a struggle. The author felt things were going ok to start with, taking the 1st and going a little way in front in the 2nd, but Colin battled back into it to take the 2nd. Aided by one or two (or more) dire fluke shots, the author scrambled the 3rd, and eventually got into some sort of decent form to take control in the 4th and run out a 3-1 winner.
Next door, King Lewy v Jeal.
Ted (called in as a last minute replacement due to the fiasco the previous day with Simon) seemed keen to make amends for the Teddy throwing incident on the backwater of PL's court 4 last time they met. Didn't see any of this, but honours looked even after 2 games, with seemingly dominant performances in one game to each of them. After that Ted held on to take the next two games narrowly before departing into the night on a mission to Limpsfield.
Next up Dutch Prodigy v Davies.
Saw a little bit of this one. Dutch seems to get bigger every time I see him - not that it seems to affect his game overmuch. Stepping in to replace El Cap who was apparently still toiling away in the darkest recesses of a bank vault somewhere, Dutch looked in pretty good nick for this match. Apart from a brief respite in the 2nd Andy was unable to make sufficient impression on him, and by all accounts this included a body check that left Andy feeling much the worse for wear and Dutch wondering whether a little gnat had just brushed against him. A fairly controlled performance to run out 3-1 for BCC.
Next door, Kimpton v Pratt.
WW had been gagging to get on court and away all evening. Despite his obvious irritation at getting on so late, his recent run of improving form continued. Didn't see any of this due to marking duties, but my sources report that it was an impressive performance. The first seems to have seen Rich still in the car, grabbing back the 2nd before narrowly losing the 3rd. WW then leant on the accelerator to take the 4th pretty comfortably for another 3-1 to PL, before disappearing hotfoot to salvage what remained of the evening.
Last up a severely underwhelmed Stabler v Robbins.
JEJ had arrived in plenty of time after his earlier Surrey Cup game, and Sam meanwhile was fuming at the fact that having wanted to get on first, and being bang on time (unlike any of his teammates) he'd got on last and missed the footie (no big loss really though as it happened). JEJ produced his trademark performance reinforcing his moniker. Just enough done to claim the first two games, with Sam making a few too many mistakes (particularly after leading 7-2 in the 2nd). By the time the 3rd came along, Sam had had enough, and JEJ comfortably eased through to record the best win of the evening.
A successful night for PL1, boosted by Teddy Boy's appearance. More valuable points on the board and nicely topped off with scampi and chips, sitting two feet away from a blaring telly while the other end of the bar area hosted a (Wednesday night!!) wedding reception. |
