Report

Report:As seems to be usual in the PL1 v B.Hill encounters, getting a PL team together proved to be a challenge. At 8pm with only four players available it became apparent that the 4th team's match had been cancelled and consequently we could poach their no.2 Gerald Tredinnick. Thanks are due (a) to Gerald for playing at no notice, (b) to Erdal Niyazoglu for letting us have him and forsaking his friendly, and (c) to BH for have sufficient players down there to rejig the order and allow us to field a full team having expected to face only four.

With all that faffing around out of the way we got under way. Well, there were no big surprises going to happen here. JEJ had been called away last minute on a mercy mission to Chichester for National League, to cover (amongst others) for the injured Tim Garner who (hang on a minute ... played for Dulwich last night !??). WW was on nights so the nomination list took on an even more desperate look than normal.

First up were Davies v Lennox.
Andy nearly managed to sneak the 1st in this one, but a very swift 2nd and defeat in the 3rd meant that despite tweaking a hamstring AGFB was just too good. Said AGFB was suitably impressed with the efficiency of the PL bar staff as when requesting ice for the aforementioned hamstring he was presented with a pukka ice pack rather than emptying the contents of the ice bucket into an old T-shirt.

Next door Tredinnick v Bushell.
DC seemed to improve as the match wore on in this one. The 1st was close fought and could have gone either way, but as it got further in DC out-steadied steady Eddie Gerald to wrest the upper hand and emerge a 3-0 winner. Must be all that practice he's been having lately.

Next up Currie v Newberry.
Due to the availability of three courts, we had the match over in record time. Didn't see a single shot of this one. Mike tells me he played ok, and the score seems to suggest it was a good game, but Mike's lack of squash due to his onerous work commitments probably didn't help his cause overmuch. Still, at least it got him out of an all-nighter.

At the other end, the author v Rasheed.
This match up came around as part of the to-ing and fro-ing of players, and large number of phone calls throughout the day between the author and DC (par for the course with this fixture). Eventually it was decided that (a) JEJ was unavailable, (b) BH had a number of injury/unavailability problems, and (c) Farzan had been lined up when BH expected to face a 5 man team, and was reluctant to forgo the opportunity of facing the author (not), or losing his match fee. Anyway, it went pretty much as expected, with the young protagonist (looking like an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean) wielding his cutlass to good effect, and racing to pick up any half decent shots the author managed. First two over in short order, and then he must have had an attack of sympathy as the author got to 8-4 up before normal service was resumed.

Last match of the night, Grey v Mayle.
Alex was another Hillbilly suffering from an injury last night, but despite this and having to come off part way through to get strapped up, had enough in the tank to overcome Simon in a close five setter to register PL's only points of the evening.

So the imperious Hillbilly ship sweeps ever onward, with PL unable (again) to even register a ripple in their wake. One of these days maybe we'll get a good match up, but I'm not holding my breath. Thanks are also due to BH for not hammering the bar which was very reasonable considering the early finish.
