Report: | Woe, woe and thrice woe. The battle of the PL teams turned out to be a bit of a disaster for the so called 1st team. Initially things were looking good. Rumours of a potential new recruit to the 2nds in Ben Ford had failed to materialise, Dave Harris was out injured and all looked to be set fair for the 1sts (despite WW being on hols). Not to last sadly.
First on newly promoted Boatwright v London snr.
Matt seemed keen to get stuck into this one, coming out of the blocks pretty quickly. Despite this, and the author's usual pedestrian start, Matt started to hand his grateful opponent a few gift points, resulting in the 1st going to the author. This was closely followed by the 2nd, as the author warmed to the task. Matt stepped it up in the 3rd and the mistake count seemed to swap from one player to the other, with Matt taking it narrowly. Feeling somewhat disgruntled by this turn of events, the author did what he should have done all along in the 4th, kept it straight and tight and to a decent length to take the 4th without Matt troubling the scorer.
Next door, Miles v Davies (sounds like some kind of musician).
Andy probably feels justifiably aggrieved by this result. This was just about as tight as it could get, but newly unattached John emerged a 3-0 victor. Andy allowed himself to be taken out of his usual hard fast attacking mode and instead get drawn into John's relaxed slow-balling style. After narrowly losing the 1st Andy went 8-3 up in the 2nd only to see it snatched from under his nose. A small lead in the 3rd also dissolved, and John edged through with a pretty cultured performance to take the match.
Back on court 1, the crowds started to gather to watch Jeal v Robbins.
JEJ started this one off looking in a no-nonsense mood. A couple of hard games went his way with controlled squash, despite Ted's best efforts. After this point however, the concentration just wandered a little bit, and as he is wont to do, Ted capitalised on it and snuck the 3rd and the 4th in close fought games. JEJ was obviously not best pleased at this development and switched back on again with a vengeance in the 5th, wrapping it up 9-1. The Jeal racket armoury was depleted by another breakage as it winged its' way across court thanks to its' owner's frustration, and the 1sts eased ahead.
Next door a ring rusty Sheldon v Currie.
Mark having been prevailed upon to stand in for the 2nds does what he always does on these rare occasions. How he can not pick a squash racket up for the best part of a year and still turn in this sort of performance mystifies me. No sign of lost touch at all, just a bit of an understandable lack of match fitness. Mike had been dispatched onto court with the captain's usual instructions to cut out the flicky drops and thump it. This seemed to be fine as he took the 1st, but temptation got the better of him in the 2nd and Mark capitalised on a succession of gifts and mistakes. Despite cutting out the majority of the short stuff, Mike seemed unable to get enough control over his own shots to make much of an impression on the rest of the match, and Mark took a deserved 3-1 win.
So, all square and all down to Blackman v Grey.
Simon had also been well briefed to cut out the normal two game warm-up for this one. Sadly he seemed to take this as a cue to take a three game warm-up instead. It really just didn't happen for him, and Andy always looked to be pretty much in control of proceedings. The ball seemed to develop magnetic properties as time and again Simon's shots attracted themselves either back to himself or to the tin. 3-0 to Andy then, and a good win for the 2nd team.
The loss of WW proved yet again to be a hammer blow to the 1st team. The 2nds did well to overcome their reduced strength, and seemingly the best substitute in the division helped pull them through. |
