Report: | Another fine mess we got ourselves into. Cascades arrived with a full strength team this week (unlike the previous encounter with PL2).
First up Robbins v Brewer
JEJ ought (at least for this match) to be renamed EEJ (as in easily). He was in imperious form unlike some matches this season, and had John scampering and diving all round the court. Both players played their part in a thoroughly entertaining match to watch, with EEJ dominating the majority of the rallies but John finding some brilliant recovery shots and nick boasts aplenty. Final score 3-1 to EEJ.
Out in the wilds of court 4 Pratt v Soliman.
Didn't see this due to marking duties but WW obviously gave it everything against a revitalised Phones4U who seems much happier a few slots down the order these days. Mo took it 3-2 but was made to work all the way for it.
Next, back in civilisation, London snr v Baker.
Having got a bashing in the first half, the author was looking to improve matters somewhat. Neil seemed to have other ideas though, and despite (I felt) playing reasonably well, the author lost the first two for the sake of not many points. Having benefitted from the accumulated wisdom of the many years experience of coach Kimber the author got it together to take the 3rd in reasonable style, but normal service was resumed in the 4th for Neil to emerge 3-1 winner.
Back in the outback, Davies v Lake.
Steptoe obviously repeated his first half performance here. Didn't see any of it, but Andy tells me that he was in with a shout at the end of both 1st and 3rd games but was sadly unable to convert either, going down 3-0 in the end.
Last on Grey v Lamprell.
One of Simon's better performances of the season saw him overcome the loss of the 1st to deservedly go 2-1 up with some impressive rallying. It clearly must have taken its toll though. Although he didn't look particularly tired towards the end, the previously accurate and pretty tight length evaporated and Stuart was able to feed off the weaker cross courts that came his way, taking both 4th and 5th fairly comfortably to win 3-2.
Another spiffing evening then. Now all that remains to be seen is whether the Sly Fox will deliver on his pre-season promise. Having had Mr Butler pinched from under my nose, plus all the pre/early season politicking, plus mid season star signings I'm starting to think that maybe I need to change my deodorant! The abyss starts to loom large ... |
