Report:FLAT PERFORMANCE FROM BCC GIVE BIGGIN HILL THE POINTS

After last weeks hardly fought win against relegation threatened rivals Park Langley 2, it was back down to earth with a bump for Bromley CC 1st team – with a drubbing at Biggin Hill.

Martin ‘The Belgian International’ was dropped after last week’s disgraceful performance against Kent #1 and World No.99 Ben Ford. There were rumours that Martin found out that Park Langley 2, in an effort to avoid the drop at all costs, had paid Ben £150 for the match. The 2 pints he was offered paled in significance – however that still didn’t justify his performance.

With the squad down to it’s bare bones, and people claiming injuries, I decided to ring Biggin Hill supremo Mark Lennox on Monday morning (8.30am to be precise) to enquire what sort of team he would be putting out. I know they are fighting for the title, so only thought it fair that I give them the best possible chance to earn as many points as possible, and at the same time save some of the appearance fees and win bonuses that they have to shell out to their superstars. As usual Mark was pretty cloak and dagger, and gave nothing away – so I resorted to making my own decisions on team selection – rather than second guessing the sort of team that he would put out.

‘Silent Scot’ vs Mark Lennox (No.4)

Good job this game went on first, otherwise we may have had to stay at Biggin Hill all night. The 1st game had only got to 4-4, whilst on the other court Lewis was already 2-0 down. Long rallies with neither player being able to put it away ensued, however it was Mark who maintained is consistency towards the end of the first game, with a series of tight lengths. ‘Silent Scot’s’ frustration grew and Mark took the 1st. Yours truly missed the second game (as he was trying to convince the reporter from the Sevenoaks Chronicle, that Biggin Hill Squash 1st team should win the team of the year award), as did ‘Silent Scot’, with Mark going 2-0 up in quick fashion.
‘Silent Scot’ never gets tired though and battled back in the 3rd to force a 4th game. The 4th was tight all the way, with Mark looking like he was suffering from too much time spent on the sunbeds. However he just had enough to give Biggin Hill their first win of the evening.

Rory vs ‘King Lewy’
It took a while (well two games) for poor Lewy to realise that Rory was a ‘Lefty’. After going 2-0 down in a matter of minutes, self-appointed ‘Coach’ (James) told him that he needed to serve from the other side. King Lewy took the advice and began to work his way back into the match. Several long rallies in the 4th looked to be taking it’s toll on Rory’s legs and King Lewy somehow managed to earn game points. Rory had enough though and held on. 2-0 to Biggin Hill.

El Capitano vs Deano

A contrast in fashion styles between these two with Deano opting to wear pink sweatbands around his ankles, whilst El Capitano looked like he was sponsored by E-Squash. – However as we all know in this league, style counts for nothing, it’s all about what’s up there that really matters. Both players opted for hitting the ball around at 100mph and hoping the other would make a mistake, or that Ray would make another bad call. Deano raced into an 8-1 lead in the first, but didn’t reckon for El Capitano’s new found desire to win. However the ensuing effort to get back into the game took its toll on El Capitano’s weary muscles and Deano wrapped up a tight first 10-8 and then won the second at a canter.
The third took on a different complexion with El Capitano taking the lead, whilst Deano kept moaning about his ex-girlfriend, and then every now and again shouting out that he was special. However with the 3rd delicately poised, Ray made a call that El Capitano didn’t agree with, and lost his focus. Deano took advantage and held on to win 9-6, 3-0.

Student Coach vs Gordon.

Missed all of this game, but James’ recent exploits in the Kent Plate (where he won £80 – oh damn, I could have asked him to pay Martin) has rekindled his passion for squash. Despite claiming he didn’t play well, James used all his tactical nous to outwit Gordon and win 3-2. However, this match can’t pass without a special mention to Gordon and the way he plays the game in such a sporting manner.
At 8-2 down in the fifth, and James playing a winner – to win the match! - Gordon turned round and said, ‘Oh well, that’s me done!’ Very good of him to concede with the match still in the balance – err I mean over!

Sam vs Toby

Sam is hitting 30 in the next couple of weeks, whilst Toby is hitting 30stone. Sam complained of a bad back that he injured at work, whilst sticking and pasting pretty pictures to a piece of card all day. Toby complained that his suit was too tight around his waste.
That is the only interesting part of this match. Sam was going through the motions and compensating for his back, whilst Toby moved around the court like an elephant in a bath-tub. Sam looked slightly interested in the 3rd as he had game point, but Toby managed to focus for long enough the close out the win 3-0.
I now have a week to rustle up some funds and see who I can bring out for the Amida game. No room for sentiment anymore, BCC need all the points they can get. Meanwhile Biggin Hill march on towards another title challenge with Dulwich – the closest yet.
All jokes aside, it’s good for the league that each team is getting stronger, I for one am getting much tougher games at 5, and that can only help me improve. My only gripe with the way things are heading is that some teams pay players to play one or two games a season, just to help them stay up – and that in my opinion is not in keeping with the way the league should be run. – Oh yeah, and Mark if you are going to ring me at 10am on a Monday morning, can we talk about job recruitment as opposed to what team I will put it out?
