Report

Report:The events during the evening of the last week of the Div 1 Priory matches put me in mind of that Metallica classic - "... And Justice For All". Well it felt that way for PL1 anyway. At last an end to all the intrigue. PL1 entertained a Bexley side weakened at the bottom of the order by the absence of the skiing contingent, and meanwhile our friends over at Amida put out their strongest possible line-up (apart from one mortally offended P.Nicol), as they took on PL2.

The PL4 team kindly decided to forgo their slot on the "show courts" and spent a fair bit of time adding support to PL1's desperate attempts to avoid relegation. All this whilst successfully completing their push for promotion to Div2. Well done lads - and thanks.

First up Davies v Lewis.
Andy, having been told there was no pressure on him to win but the season depended on it, came out of the blocks like a man on a mission. Exploiting Rob's lack of mobility to the full he reeled off the first two games in double quick time, and despite Rob getting into the game rather more in the 3rd, completed a good start to the evening for PL1 with a 3-0 victory.

Next door Tinnams v Breen.
Paul, having been drafted in as a late sub put up a creditable performance in this one. Bexley sub Mick, looking like he'd comfortably hold his own in a Div 1 team (although his normal team captain seems to have engineered this option out of existence - it's not only PL that have political infighting then), seemed just a bit too strong.
Some good extended rallies, but Paul wasn't quite penetrating enough, going short a bit too often, and Mick played very consistently throughout the match to level the team scores.

Next up London snr v Steeden.
On the back of a personal worst ever performance in a match the previous weekend, the author wasn't keen on extending that type of form. Motivation levels were stratospherically high, and this game panned out as most games between these two old (very in one case) adversaries do. A number of long gruelling rallies in every game, with the author just doing enough to squeeze through in the majority. Aided and abetted by repeated physical assaults on his opponent (hope the cut eyebrow and dead leg are ok now Mark - sorry), and the totally unjustified opinion of various members of the Bexley team (and PLl's team mascot!!) that sympathy was in short supply, the author ran out a 3-0 winner.

Whilst the above match was going on, Robbins v Harrison.
On the next door court, an equally fired up JEJ was giving the lie to his moniker. Anyone who suspects that paid players are only there for the cash should have been there. After much encouragement and coaching for other teammates prior to his match, and marking the majority of the above match due to the speed of his win, I think it's fair to say that JEJ's contribution to the PL1 team is up there with anybody's. Didn't see any of the match, but Duane was obviously still on the ski slopes in mind if not body, as these two normally have a close tussle (as in the first half match). So a 3-0 win and PL1 had the match in the bag.

Last up Grey v Green.
Again, didn't see much of this, but despite nearly managing to sneak the 3rd (with a lead near the end), Simon was unable to add any points to the PL1 scorecard. Matt seems to have produced his usual brand of controlled squash to cruise through to a fairly comfortable win.

The match was followed by a flurry of texts between messrs Steeden and Martin over at Amida to see what was happening, and thankfully for PL1, Amida did enough to prevent PL1 getting relegated. Seems a bit bizarre to be celebrating finishing 3rd from bottom, but it's been one of those seasons spent looking fo crumbs of comfort. And so to the bar where the main topic appeared to be trying to decide which Bexley team Rob would be representing next year. In the end Rob decided he'd probably form a 6th team all of his own.
